Humvee upkeep question...??

Hundreds listed in DOD excess right now. I your state forester participates in the FFP (or FEPP) program you can go to the DRMO and pick out the best one you see. BUT I have heard that some (or many) foresters have arbitrarily decided that they are not going to allow HMMWV transfers thru FFP or FEPP. In that case go to your state federal surplus office (every state has one) and work out a deal. Will likely cost you some $. It's a scam but these state federal surplus office get DOD (and GSA) property for free and then sell it to local gov't and "not for profits". The income pays for transportation and supports their lifestyle. In Iowa have a deal where they will process the paperwork for $100 and I arrange transportation.

Be very conservative with loading. As you may recall the things are large but have a rather limited GVW. Good plan would be max of about 175gal of water. By the time you add on pump, equipment, and a couple heft FF you be at max wt. Or you'll break it (expensive parts not at NAPA).

FD can purchase parts from DOD at the AMDF price (which often is going to sound outrageous).

I've never heard of anyone in the military calling them hummers. Jarheads got to be "different.".

We had 400 gal on ours, and with pump, SCBA, etc & 2 guys it was with in ~500 of max weight. And rode really far down in the rear.

Must be dependent on where you were, when I was in (east coast Marine, CAAP platoon), we just called them "trucks".

To the OP:

Good luck, most first and early 2nd Generation HMMWV's did not set any great records for reliability in service, ergo, you and your chief are going to be shelling out lots of money for a truck far below a good M35A2 and with a lot less practical load carrying capability. Generally, it will end up as your VFD's yard ornament.... No disrespect, but I'd let the county turn it back in so GP can earn lots of bucks making it an off road only vehicle.....

I have owned a first generation HMMWV since 1999. It is one of the most reliable military vehicles I have ever owned. Driveline parts are all gm. Easy to find and not to expensive. The geared hubs can be expensive and may give you fits but once you get them sorted not really that much trouble. Many many parts are your standard m series stuff.

If you use the vehicle within it's parameters and don't abuse it they are one of the best vehicles you can own. There are no electrical gremlins in them esp if you put one of the newer control boxes in them. This is my 2 cents. I love my truck.

I am with Chuck on this, I have had many of them with no real issues.

In the sticky at the top of this forum, there are very helpful pointers that will get you started, including replacement parts. Please make sure you print it out and keep handy for others to learn. Be safe!
