injection pump?

I have had a duece for a year and it does not run on its own. It will run on starter fluid through the intake, but not on it's own. At first the pump was stuck and broken so we had it gone through by a local shop. It ran for a little bit then lost power and stalled. Since then we have had the pump rechecked and all the injectors checked to no avail. We have to be missing something. As far as I can tell the timing is set but I am not an expert on diesels by any means. So at this point it will smoke while cranking but not start or stay running if we give it a boost of starting fluid. I have tried to walk the timing back and forth a bit with not alot of change.

I know little to nothing about these trucks so I could be missing something very obvious. Not even very sure where to put swtches and levers for sure. So I am in need of some of the members to give me directions on where to look.

Are you sure you have fuel to the injector pump?

If you have fuel and air she should start.

When you flip the switch you should be able to feel the in tank fuel pump vibrating.

There is a bleeder valve on top of the secondary fuel filters.

Open the bleeder valve and turn on the switch...if there is no blockage fuel should squirt out of the bleeder hole. If you have fuel to the secondaries you should have fuel to the pump.

If you have fuel to the pump open one of the injector lines where it goes into the head and crank for a few minutes (don't burn out the starter)....if there is no fuel coming out of the injector line then you prob have a bad pump or it is way out of adjustment.

:ditto:on wreckermans take. It could be pumping fuel but have enough air in it not support combustion, hence the white smoke. Or have a giant restriction.

If you mistakenly installed the IP off one tooth in the retarded direction, the fuel will be injected as the piston is going down, and the air is rapidly cooling. The engine won't run, but it will spew unburned fuel (white smoke) out the stack.

it does have fuel returning to the tank in the return line and we have bleed the injector lines. It runs on starting fluid so I do not think it is a restriction of air. great thoughts keep em coming.

the crank has 3 timing marks on it and from what I have read they are for differnt applications how do I know which one for sure? then retime the pump is it to the mark on the front portion of the pump or the one toward the back side below the head.

You motor should have a data plate on the side of the block above the alt. That should tell you what motor you have. Then you'll put your harmonic balancer on that mark. Make sure the first two rocker arms are loose under the valve cover so you know your at TDC, if not, rotate the motor over once more. Then you will make sure the scribe on the disk lines up with the pointer under the 4 bolt window(advance unit). If it needs adjusting, loosen the 3 bolts on the gear on the front of the IP. Use a socket to move the disk where it needs to go and tighten the 3 bolts back down. Tighten everything up and see what happens.

I will double check to see if it is 180 off this weekend but to the best of our knowledge the motor never got turned while the pump was not in. some times you never know when there is alot of people through your shop.

Not air restriction, fuel. If the pickup is plugged or maybe the line that runs under the ft x member is pinched, it can cause enough of a restriction that will actually cause the fuel to have bubbles in it. Air compresses and then the injection timing changes causing late injection, causing hard/no start issues, white smoke and low/no power.

if you had the pump out, even if you did not turn the engine you could have put it in 180° out. you really need to read the manual and understand all the issues.
