Why don't you go ahead and call your insurance company? Most offer multi-vehicle discounts.

All you have to do is call them, and if it's too high shop around till you find the right rate.
BTW, being a single male under 25, you're gonna be in the highest "tier" of risk.

When I registered my M35 which happens to be made by AM General the vehicle make doesn't come up in the database. My insurer (statefarm) had to send the vehicle info pictures of the vehicle including the data plate and a copy of the registration to the underwriter.

All that work and the cost was minimal, very cheap to insure as I only covered liability.

Like suggested your insurance company is the place to start. One they know you and two you can qualify for discounts even on your parents account.

Cheers

Your biggest challenge with the insurance companies is going to be your age.

The insurance companies usually will not write classic/antique/collector insurance (whatever they call it) for folks under 25. Most will not allow any operator under age 25.

That probably limits you (your parents) to market rate insurance, based on the vehicle weight and claimed intended use.

Shop around. Ask your current carrier what types of insurance they issue. Maybe you can fit the deuce into a low cost niche.

Check with your state's motor vehicle folks for what types or classes of registrations they issue. There may be a type that doesn't carry the financial burden of a honest to God, gonna make a living with it commercial registration.

Pretend your from Missouri. Adopt the "Show Me" motto. Very often folks will tell you the "way it is" from limited experience. Ask them to show you why you can't do what you want to do.

Be persistent.

Good luck. Welcome to the ever expanding addiction.

Lance

PS-regarding your avatar; it doesn't look like your gonna get too many hogs to market with that. You NEED the deuce.

A truck that size, if you are going to use it for work ( hauling, pulling etc..) registration and insc is going to cost you. If you got it for it's historic value and to drive to club meetings, shows etc... ;-) it will be cheaper all around. As said earlier you need to check with your MVA and insc co.
In MD I was told at the MVA, historic tags you can drive it occasionally NOT every day.

I'm 21, and pay $35/mo. through Nationwide. Mine is registered as an Antique mainly so I don't have to get it inspected...which it would fail 9 times out of 10. I origonally bought it to tow my Bronco...I just ordered a hitch for it the other day. I'll have to re-read the DMV's Antique vehicle guidelines again, but I don't think it says anything about towing...

DOT inspection. Different states have different requirements for vehicle based on GVWR. You'll want to get on the IL DMV website and go over everything there is as far as regulations that you'll have to go through to get the truck registered. I am in the process of getting a deuce which will be plated Military Collector here in MN (lifetime plate) with insurance running $83 /year full coverage. My insurance is through Country as well, just had my agent contact JC Taylor and had him write an antique policy off them. Only kicker with JC Taylor is they require that the truck be stored inside a secured building. I can tow trailers with it as long as they are proper military trailers, but can not use it as a daily driver.

You had better figure on that MPG although most get better than that. Just like any other vehicle driving conditions and habits will effect the mileage.

I have State Farm, Deuce is licensed as a Historic in Missouri and I pay $26 every 6 months for liability only. I am limited to driving 1,000 miles per year and I must keep a log of my driving.

i am 21 and live in PA. i am going to use my duece for hauling but the insurance company doesent know that yet. i pay 200 for 6 months. i think mine is under a commercial policy because my carrier state farm puts everything under commercial if it has more than 2 axles. so if you are just driving under acouple thousand miles a year i wouldnt pay more than 400-500 a year.

Several things to keep in mind:

Your age. It will have a major effect on the price of insurance. At 40 and with a perfect driving record, insuring this as a regular use truck it runs me around $250 a year. No limit on mileage, and liability only. Full coverage is so far off the scale it isn't funny.

The GVWR of a Deuce. It will cost. Plates (regular, not historic) cost $550 a year in VA because of the Gross Weight. It is considered a heavy truck. This is non-commercial too.

If you go with historic plates and under-insure it, then hit someone or something, you won't be driving again for a long time. Heavy truck crashes bring out the accident investigation team every time.

Insurance and plates are the tip of the iceberg. Purchasing and maintaining one of these trucks isn't exactly cheap. Heck, a fill-up at the pump can take a small fortune with a 50 gallon tank.

Even if your parents foot the bill, its likely that the insurance company will have to know you are the driver. If they are not informed and you crash it, your parents will be held liable, and the insurance company will cancel the policy immediately. Hospital stays for severely injured accident victims can very easily top $20K a day now.

Proceed with caution, but more importantly think about it very clearly before you take the plunge.
