Is this an engine crack or paint?

Poor man's Magnaflux: stick a strong magnet near the 'crack'. Brush on a slurry of that stuff that builds up under your shop grinder. If there's a crack, the FE particles migrate to the edges.
Probably just paint cracks.

Great Idea we did that on cyl heads all the time. But IMO it looks like paint. In the 2nd pic it looks like you could just peal it off.

If you have access to a pressure washer then spray it down. If its just flaking pain t it will come off and you'll be able to repaint it. If it is a crack it will probably only come off around the area of the crack. Then you'll be able to see it better. And after you're done, if it isn't cracked you'll be all cleaned up and ready to repaint it. Personally, if it is cracked and still runs good......ya can't see it from my house.......run it till it dies!!!!!!

Looks like a paint crack to me, because of no oil or antifreeze on the block. DO NOT use the torch to check it, if your blocks sound now (most likely), it won't be after the application of heat to a limited area like that. Use the chemical test kits alluded to above, or magnaflux it if absolutely necessary. The Multifuels are fairly solid engines, no use aggravating the aging process by doing something more then just cleaning and checking, then repainting.
