M816 needed the transfer case sprag air cyl. rebuilt today.
While I was doing that I tested the sprag shaft to see if it has a Netrual return. It has been awhile since I did the last repair on a air cyl. and I did not check to see if the sprag shaft would go into forward and reverse sprag plus return to a netrual.
Today I found that there is no netrual and the sprag shaft can easely be put in forward and reverse with no netrual spring to hold it in netrual.
The Military is wrong and I would say if you made the air cutoff mod to the poppets to put it back the way it was.

Floridianson, I hope others read your report and understand what you checked, and why you checked it. At least 2 years ago I took a 5 ton transfer case apart and found that there is no neutral between forward and reverse sprag engagement. That caused me to give up on 5 ton lockout hub development since I couldn't stop the sprag from trying to engage when it sensed the rear wheels turning and the front wheels not turning. Shutting off the air to the transfer case air cylinder will leave the sprag set in either forward or reverse, and that is not good. I did post these findings back then, don't recall anyone agreeing with me. Now that the 939 series is out in public, my 5 ton lockout hubs are back on. JT

Speaking of your hubs, what's the status on that project?

Andrew, I am waiting for the shell casting quote. interior machine work is all set. need to design spring set engagement then good to go. JT

Yea JT I all so posted a while ago about not likeing that Mod but it took me till now to tear another one down and check.
