Just won an auction for my first HMMWV, the wait begins

I ended up with the winning bid on a basic 2 door with no top. 2009 barstow rebuild. It's got a few known issues (heater not working, missing wipers, possible leak on transfer case). Hopefully nothing major. My plan is to go soft top and soft doors, probably 4 door. Link below. If anyone with a good eye and knowlege wants to do a quick review and point out possible issues, I'd appreciate any feedback. You won't hurt my feelings and I'm mentally ready for some repairs buying something like this sight unseen.

Thanks to the many forum members and Steve at retired war horses for dealing with all my questions the last few days. I probably should have gotten a little more educated before jumping in, but hopefully it was a good jump. Time will tell.

I think you got a nice truck for a good price. Looks good to me. You should get the title with it for 100.00 and you will have to ask for it. Looks as good or better than the one I got in May and I paid 3,300 more. Mine is a 2002 never been rebuilt.

Are you saying it's still worth getting a title from GP to make it easier to get it for TX? Where would they title it if not in TX? I probably should have pressed him on it more, I just assumed I'd get the SF97 and use that to get the title in TX.

as long as it's a clean SF-97 (no off road only stamp on it) then I doubt you will have any issues that route, as long as the person behind the counter is competent.

You would get a title from another state. Then you just take to dmv and transfer it to TX. Just like if you moved to TX from another state.

Yes for me it is. I will have a on-road normal title from Florida, Utah, or Montana. I should be able to take it to the Nevada dmv get the vin verified and leave with plates. Should be like any other vehicle I have bought out of state.

Congrats on yours. Yep, there were 3 almost identical 09 rebuilds that went today. Basic 2 doors w no roofs or doors and no miles since rebuild. Several last week also. There is one more scheduled for next week. They all seem to be going right around $10k. No flashy stuff, but I like that none of them had armor holes in the body.

TX has recently changed their FMV laws to specifically accept SF97s. With this in mind, a SF97 should be quite sufficient and no need to spend the extra $ on a title from GP.

Usually I recommend spending the $ on the title. But TX is the exception.

Looks like you got a good truck at a decent price. I glanced through the pics and didn't see anything major.

The charging guage shows where I'd expect it to be for either fully charged batteries and an INOP alternator, or flat dead batteries and a working alternator (more likely)

Gov planet takes the military batteries out and puts car batteries in! I think every sale should include a picture of the batteries! I just ordered new Hawker military batteries and they are not cheap compared to mirrors and lights they seem to photograph!

2 car batteries still put the gauge in the middle of the green.

Presumably they're replacing deceased batteries with the cheapest thing they can get.

I think they are selling the military batteries somewhere and replacing them with car batteries. Anyone buying would have a reasonable explanation that a military vehicle would have military batteries without a picture showing otherwise. It’s a big item that should be disclosed.

I sincerely doubt it's worth their trouble to put in a couple car batteries in the hopes of making a few bucks selling used Hawkers on the extremely limited secondary market. Who is the potential buyer?

That’s a dishonest business practice. I have the bare minimum to start my truck and they don’t fit the tray and the hold down doesn’t work. I’m just saying that they show pics of a 56 dollar mirror that needs to be replaced but don’t show the 900$ worth of batteries that you expect to be there

Anything not pictured is presumed absent. Inferences are frequently in error.

If the truck started and ran, and no batteries were pictured, then what I'd expect to find would be 6TLs on their last leg and in need of immediate replacement.

Another example of invalid inference- the truck was listed as "will not start and will not run", and "the starter is missing". The buyer thought that those must be cause and effect. He anticipated replacement of the starter would give him a running truck, and screamed "fraud" when he discovered the engine was hydrolocked with bent rods.

On the subject of auctions, one strategy frequently used by people who aren't knowledgeable goes like this - " I don't know what I'm doing, but these other bidders do. I'll just bid til I win. They'll stop bidding before the price goes too far unreasonably high, and I'll win it for just one bid increment higher than the experienced guys would go. I really want it, so one increment too high is OK." WHEN YOU GET TWO OF THESE GUYS ON THE SAME TRUCK YOU GET THINGS LIKE THAT $35K SALE!
