Late model 6.5 waste gate?

Has anyone put one in a truck and retained the (functioning) waste gate? I'm talking about a side mount turbo, serpentine belt 6.5 out of a 97ish GM pickup, with the computer controlled IP etc. . . .

I'm aware that to install in a 1028A3 the computer controlled IP goes away, along with the serpentine belt setup, but was wondering if retaining the waste gate would be worth it?

If you have a boost gauge and pyro I would think you could adjust the fuel to not go much over 10 on boost and keep it at 1100 or so?, and not need the waste gate?

I would think that retaining the waste gate would allow you to tune the boost at the turbo instead of just the IP. More control always seems best. If it is not in the way then why not use it. I beleive you can remove it at a later date if it is not working they way you want it to.

not a turbo specialist but I think it makes sense to keep it, I may be wrong.

I was under the impression you had to have it... and you needed to adjust it so, as it would open at a preset desired Lb... Not sure yet how you would adjust it, had seen a thread somewhere, where you could modfiy it with a spring and some allthread.. I will look for it again....

You need the waste gate. Heath diesel makes a manual one for that application that's totally adjustable. I have played with the one I have and with the spring tension off it will not make any boost and with the spring tension all the way it made 24lbs and blew a head gasket in short order, but it sure ran good to that point.

WOW, 24 psi, just a bit high :shock: no wonder the head gasket let go, lucky it wasn't the bottom end that let go!

Yeah dude it is adjustable I have on of the of my 09 motor I have set 2 to 3 at Idle and runs up to 8 to 11 when I am on it.. temp gauge was around 900F with GM-5 turbo

Can you elaborate on the pump cores?, I was planning on a pump from a 6.2, I thought this would be a good way to go as it is going in a 1028A3, I looked at these:

DB2-4911
From OFI, but thought they were a bit pricey as I'm on a limited budget.

I also have a DS4 pump in working order that was on the motor when it blew, and a DB2 that was on a low mile 6.2 in a cucv2 that took a hard hit in the ass but the motor ran sweet, it has ip lines for the short injectors. I also have the mechanical waste gate controller that looks like new. I would part with all of it.

Sorry I have three db2 pumps from 1993 6.5 turbo diesels let me know if need one..

(which is the one I picked up for my project motor) Does any know of one that will work for certain on the late style turbo?

Is it a matter of the bracket not bolting up?

I've got this one ordered. . . . guess I'll find out soon

There are two different units required depending on the year of the setup.
You ordered #1055 and might need #1056 instead.

i made my wastegate control for my 95 chevy 6.5, i used a battery hold down rod, a spring, and a wing nut.. i took the factery vacuum wastegate, and removed the top of it (the part that the vacuum line hooks into) and removed all the "guts" and used the remaining part as a bracket.. i then ran the battery hold down rod through the "bracket" and hooked the end of the rod to the wastegate arm, and sliped the spring over the other end of the rod, and tightened it against the bracket with the wing nut... this caused the wastegate to be spring loaded, and the tighter you make the spring, the more boost you can run.. i run around 13-15 most of the time.. sometimes peaking around 20psi if i tighten the spring some..
