IF it has the bigger turbo, the LDS is visibly different.
If it has the C or D, then you need to do like Gimp mentioned.

True, but how many LDT motors have you seen with that big turbo on it?
Gimp is right, but those are definitely things to look for.

I am thinking about putting one on my dropside truck. No, the starter being where it is - is making me think twice, but I'm not convinced it isn't do-able yet.

Looking at the engine tag is probably the best way, also a quick loook at the oil deepstick also helps , so far LDS i have seen have it in the back of the block where LTD have it in front of the turbo.

Excellent, I;ll look on the IP and dataplate. I was hoping there was someway of telling without having to break out the dang reading glasses. Think I need to get a retaining strap for them. Heat plus humidity equals sweat that comes down the nose that makes the glasses slide off. Now is that a valid reason to hope there was a way to tell the difference without putting the dang things on.

btw Panzerwillie...do you really have an SdKfz-251D or is that an OT-810 or is it someone elses? That's one of my favorite vehicles. Don't suppose you want to get rid of that and maybe a Panther for a working mans salary (LOL).

Can it be confirmed as a LDS if the dipstick is located at the rear of the engine? It sounds like the LDS could have the dipstick located in either place, but does this hold true for the LDT also?

I never look at the block to details to see if it has the provision to relocate the dipstick in front or behing the turbo on both models LDS and LTD will look this weekend at difrent engines and compare, as far as the halftrack it is a OT810 , being converter by to a SDK251D even if there was a SDK251 in the conditions that ot810 it would be prizesless , however SKODA which fabricated all the SDK251 in WWII produce the OT810 till about the late 50's before the CHZK started using russian equipment, they are pretty similar and you can exchange lots of parts if you lucky to find them its being a long project hope to have it running soon ..:-D

Yet again, the pumps are NOT a telltale, westy put an LDS pump on an LDT. The plate on the passenger side is the only way to tell.

Yes, they have.... two bosses/1/4"plugs since dipstick reaches into the deep sump of the oil pan... and pan is reversible.
Exception of the rule: LDS427, front only...

My deuce has an LDS. No plate on the engine, PS pump removed (for clearance with the radiator), oil pan has been flipped. The only way to tell (that I could see) is the turbo being very different from a C or a D on the LDT motors. Note also that the LDS motor in mine did not have the fuel density compensator (it's not bypassed...it's not even there!).

I posted pics of my turbo some time back on one of the "which turbo do I have?" threads...it's different (mine is not the kind with a waste gate, but some of them did have one).

I'm happy to post more pics of the engine if anyone wants to see more....

I know Ernie (SasquatchSanta) also did this swap.
