Leaded gas and tranny oil????

Good day all and Hello. As you can see I'm new here and just procured a farm fresh XM211. Just thought I'd pick a few brains out there that have "been there, done that.". Curious about the 302 on modern pump gas and what the proper replacement oil is for the hydromatic. Seem like silly enough questions, but if you don't know, you don't know. :roll:

Depending on the condition of your engine, the only thing I'd suggest is doing a fresh valve job and replace the exhaust valve seats with the hardened seats, then it will run just fine on pump gas. This is much more reliable than additives (lead substitute). If your engine is seriously worn and smoking any, I'd suggest a complete overhaul, as the increased compression resulting from the valve job will probably finish off your rings if they're on their way out. Check with your local transmission shop for suggestions about the trans fluid. If I remember correctly, many of those had MC-305 transmissions which used non-detergent 30w oil. Check the TM on that. You can purchase 30W-ND oil at most farm supply stores. An older transmission specialist can advise you best on that.

Appreciate the input, and the warning. Will definitely keep my karma stone handy around here!!! Not real sure how this rescue is gonna go. Couldn't bear to see it cut up, sooo, the stray had to come home with me. Pretty much everything about it is a mystery at the moment. Wish me luck!!! [thumbzup]

Just put Dexron in the Hydramatic, can be any version, they are all based on 10 weight oil. Run regular unleaded in the 302, with the few miles you will put on the truck it won't warrant the expense of valve seats.

That's a nice find that will make your cheeks sore from smilin'. Can you post a lot of photos because I require visual stimulation to override memory loss.

There are lots of questions that can be answered in the TM's however I've read them and they're just not that funny.

For what it's worth I find with my older cars trucks and tractors the unleaded gas is't the problem as much the alcohol that's been added. The alcohol messes with the needle valve in the carburator. See if there is a fuel dealer near you that sells gas without alcohol, more expensive but will cause you saving a lot of hassel with fuel problems. I cant find gas without alcohol so I wash my gas with water to get rid of the alcohol for my tractors, lawn mowers and chain saws.2cents

From the little bit I have been able to bounce around this site, looks like the informtion is plentiful and very useful. In the process of getting the logistics together to get the old man home where I can crawl up in it after work and get lost. Appreciate the direction to the TM's, probably would've took a minute to find em. However, this truck came with an original TM dated October 1955. Talk about exciting reading!! Will definitely keep a photo log of this project.

I've been using ethanol fuel for the last 20 years in all of my vehicles (diesels excluded); 10 of those with a 302 as my daily driver without a problem.

Right, Right I hear ya. Will have all kinds of pics when I finally get the old man home. Hope to get it started and loaded maybe next weekend, then it's on like donky kong!!! Stumbled across another frame, not sure how complete it is, one of those phone calls that start with "I think I have something you need". Am thinking bout a bobber with a 55 willys pickup body. Realize I may be setting myself up for a flogging from the purists, but it's something I have laying around and thought it would be fun and interesting. Any input out there?

I agree with M1010Plowboy, the article "Hydramatic Heaven" was written by Tom at Alfa Heaven in Wisconsin. Tom has rebuilt over a dozen Hydramatics and has owned, operated and maintained a few HUNDRED M211's and M135's since the 1970's. If he recommends 10/30 Hydraulic oil, i'd probably use it myself.

Another Jimmy saved from the slow but destructive power of mother nature. I sure am glad to see so many people picking these trucks up again. Beats a little Jeep any day. :beer:

If you have a needle valve that's all brass hang on to it if you rebuild the carberator. The new replacements that have the black tip(Delrin) will soften from the alcohol and the bowl will overfill. I didn't find out about this until I'd already rebuilt almost all my carbs. Alcohol runs OK in the engine but sure will mess up a carb.2cents
