Lipstick on a Pig?

With the IP shipped off for rebuild, I have been concentrating on cleaning up the rusty engine valley. In a perfect world, I would completely strip it of all rust, then have it primed and properly painted. However, wiring and fuel lines are impeding my progress to the point where to prime and paint would only be putting lipstick on a pig. I have found a product, WD-40 Specialist Gel, which may be another option for a rusty unpainted surface. Time between applications ranges from 1-2 years and max temp is up to 500° F. It's also safe on multiple surfaces including metals, plastic and rubber.
Has anyone had experience with this WD product or a high temp rust transformer/primer/paint?
Thank you in advance,

Put duct tape squares over the intakes. Get a end wire wheel on your drill and remove rust in combination with your shop vac. Follow up with cold galvanizing spray paint covered with flat black spray enamel.

Or you could pour naval jelly in and wipe it ouT. Then after clean and rinse according to directions for the jelly, hand brush a fuel and rust resistant paint?
Lots of answers.
The spray and wait stuff, in my experience, never meets the expectations given on the can...

lots if ways to skin that cat though.
