Lmtv trans oil problem

I just went to look at a 1997 m1078. Everything looked great. Drove great. Shifted great. But the trans oil was milky with a green tint. I’m assuming the trans cooler has gone bad? Just wanting confirmation and maybe advice on how to move forward with purchase or not.

also, coolant was coming form the over flow on the tank. Could those be related?

Simple answer. Don't buy an A0 truck anyway so PASS.

As for what's wrong with *THAT* A0 truck - could be a cooler or could be water intrusion around the filler plug, etc. Water destroys the clutch material so that truck may need a new or rebuilt transmission and that's not likely to be less than $10k so probably best to assume that's soon to be a parts truck.

Overflow might just be a bad cap. My 2008 needed a new cap - it was not sealing and would dribble out the overflow hose.

Yea, especially not knowing how long it has been like that… As mentioned clutch disc adhesive is water soluble. How different it would behave with a 50% glycol mix is anyones guess.

if fluid is coming out of the pressure cap, if that cap is OK(and even if it is not), it is A. Growing fluid as the expansion area left in the tank when filled properly should not allow fluid to raise to the level of the cap, B. If it is sealed, it is building excessive pressure. Where is THAT coming from? Not sure what the oil pressure is in the cooler when running, but a cooling system would set at several PSI after shutdown. If it has grown fluid, I suspect some of that would be trans oil…

i wouldn't necessarily pass on it just because it is an A0, mechanical diesels have their charm:) but this one has some serious issues…

Parts truck…

Tell the owner to fix the water intrusion, have him drive it several hundred miles, then revisit the purchase.
