lock removal

I recently was given a tilt steering column, but the key was lost from it along time ago. how does on remove it without destroying it ?

I took mine out of my 86 Monte. It has to be soomewhat the same. Take the steering wheel off ( I had a tool that pressed down on a plate to remove the c-clip). Then is the turn signal device take that apart and you will find a set screw witch holds the mechanism for the ingnition key. take the screw out and it should come out if I remember correctly.

What year truck is the steering column from?, because it can be a screw holding the lock cylinder in or a spring loaded tab.

I think it was an 88 2500 gmc

Gonna be a phillips head (I think) screw on the right hand side as you look at it from the drivers seat, after removing the steering wheel, the steering wheel lock plate, green plastic horn electrical assembly , and the turn signal switch, remove the screw and the lock cylinder should slide out.

thanks borrowed one off some friends i n town, I have to go match the tumbler. fords are a lot easier BTW

The screw holding the lock barrel in is a torx.
GM columns are the same pretty much from when
the locking column was introduced until the newer style interiors
in the late 90's and possibly into the 2000's.​

Steering wheel puller is a must. A column spring compression
tool is handy and makes the job pretty easy.
You should be able to get a new lock barrel
for the ignition in either chrome or black.
Obviously black is preferred.​

Believe it or not, but the lock actually wears out over time.
I have a Suburban with 270K miles on it and I have
had to replace the ignition lock barrel once and
it is due to be replaced again.​

I have a kit in my tool storage area that has all the tools t
o pull a column apart including tilt columns which have
their won peculiar problems with mounting hardware loosening up.​
