Locking hub on front and REAR of Bobbed Deuce

The only net improvement you'll see with locking hubs is reduced fuel consumption when installed on the front. This is because the axles are no longer spinning, nor is the gearset/pinion/front driveshaft. Now, as others have pointed out, the rear axle needs both axles to be engaged to the wheels/hubs.

This post is EXACTLY what I'm talking about.

I didn't need an explanation of the working of a differential ... I know how they work.

From all the OVER-EXPLANATION that goes on ... I couldn't tell if thee diff's were locked, unlocked, purple, pink or freakin' green.

I searched this topic VERY hard just to keep from asking this question .... because I KNEW I was gonna get a LOT of information I didn't need.aua

patracy, very thoughtful and informative post despite the fact that you urinated off the OP. Either way I'm sure one of our members will take on some fresh knowledge from it. Oddshot, just because patracy posted some basic info and you don't need it, doesn't mean other members shouldn't see it. If it's info you don't need, just skip over it. No sense is getting all huffy just because you know the info that he posted. If you prefer one word answers, I'm sure plenty of members will oblige you!

Sorry oddjob, from your posts, it seemed you didn't understand how the differential worked in our trucks. You never questioned about if the truck had a locker or answered anyone else if you had installed one. I was merely trying to explain why it isn't feasible. My apologies for trying to help. I'll refrain in the future, as I'm sure others will as well.

Those are about the best axle shafts you can get!
And if you want to put in lockers now, but upgrade axle shafts later, then get his locker.
He can make a few mods to it and it will still work with the 2" 47 spline shafts as well.

Yes my 5 ton has Lockers in the rear. There was a Air Locked rear axle for a deuce that was out there.. I think Kenny posted on it. It is rare as hens teeth.

here is my two cents.... a bobed MV (deuce or 5 ton) with no locker is like a monkey making love to a foot ball. Funny to watch but not much gets done. I like noting more then watching a big boy truck slam in to the mud and spin off a good one wheel wounder... suck a big truck and big tires and no go. for the 400 bucks slap one in.

Didnt read the four pages of BS, but here is your answer:

Chock the front tires or otherwise secure the truck from rolling. Put the transmission and/or transfer case in neutral. Lift the rear of the truck so both tires are off the ground. Turn one tire by hand, if the other side turns the same direction you have a locker. If it turns the opposite direction, you have an open diff, which is the most likely scenario. Putting a locking hub on the rear axle or axles will only give you the ability to unlock one side should a solid locker like a spool be installed (typically this is a bad idea with a solid or full carrier locker and is only done to drive home with a broken axle on one side, etc.) Locking hubs on the rear will not change the behaviour of an open diff on the street or trail and they are not advised due to potential handling problems that may be caused.

If your transfer case is in 2wd while you are driving down the road, your front drive shaft is not driving the front diff. However, as the tires are rolling down the road, the front tires are turning the inner and outer axle shafts along with the center (chunk) differential gears.

Installing locking hubs on the front axle would break this chain and therefore stop the inner axles and center chunk from turning while you are driving down the road. This may result in a small increase in fuel economy, however it will not change how the truck handles on the street, turns into parking spaces, etc., as it is an open diff (most likely) in its stock form, which allows inner and outer tires to turn at different rates.

If locking hubs were to be installed on the front axle and you selected 4wd on the transfer case, you would not actually have 4wd until you got out and locked the hubs, you would have 2wd LOW in the rear axle only with the front hubs unlocked and an open diff.

There are numerous possible combinations depending on your selection of hubs, axles, lockers, gears, etc. but that should explain the basics.

By all means i am not against the joking jab and humor here and there it is all part of the reason why i spend time here, but the bickering thing ehh. . as someone else stated on another thread its the cabin fever. sorry but i had to say it. whew. we need a wiping the forehead smiley.:p
