looking for a GOER

I was thinking of trying to find a M520 GOER to buy. I remember seeing one when I was at FT Lewis back in 88. Does anyone know of any that are for sale?

I called and Winers's has at least 4 that are about 85% or more complete,(missing winches and some small items). They have some spare parts from some that were recycled. They are asking about $9500 but sounded a bit like Monty Hall on the price.

Well,if you are on the hunt for a GOER,Dean's Govt surplus is about the only place that has intact units.Pretty sure Sam Winer scrapped all his some time back.BTW if you want one RUNNING one,go ahead and buy 3,cause you'll need 2 for spare parts,as NO MV parts dealers stock,or for that matter,can even get parts for these machines(believe me,I tried). They weigh in at about 15 tons empty,are overwidth,and at best,will run 30 mph top speed(if you can keep all 4 wheels on the ground).But definetly a worthwile vehicle to preserve,given their low production numbers.

BTW,I also priced tires,$2000 each for bias ply recaps.

Well,they were deemed "unsafe" for civilian use,and were supposed to be demilled(similar to the Gama Goats and M151 series),but some escaped the cutting torch,alas without any spare parts though.

Seems like about a year ago, someone on here posted that he had found a Goer at a salvage yard/equipment yard? in Salt Lake City,UT??.Do some search here, maybe you can find the post, I can't remember the members name. If you could chase that lead down ,that would help you on shipping-- a bit closer than the others.

Understood this is a unique machine, but doesn't it share any components with Caterpillar front end loaders?? I thought these were supposed to be (loosely) based on existing technology (at least the powertrain)?

Mine is an M553 10TON wrecker. Traded AMG a 5ton Tipper for it.
Caterpillar Tractor Co. was awarded a contract to build a total of 117 of these wreckers according to AMG and backed up by David Doyle's books.

The serial number on this M553 is Ser#- 1

With the help of AMG, we have had it running (very well) steering etc...just has a trans problem we are still working on...the trans is currently out of the hull.

Dean Surplus in Rolla MO had a couple 10 years ago.

These were built by Caterpillar Tractor Co. There were based on a production tractor/scraper outfit. I assume that the engine, transmission, hitch and other major systems were standard CAT parts. CAT never used to obsolete parts and prided itself on being able to supply parts for stuff built in the 30's (for a price). I do not know that "never obsolete" philosophy is still in effect since the Harvard MBA types took over the company.

Interesting side note: The Dean who owns Dean's Surplus in Rolla is a brother of the Dean who owns Dean Equipment - a major CAT dealer in the Midwest.

I worked for CAT for 30 years.

Used to be a fine outfit.
