Lost fifth gear today

Had my first real failure today. Pulled out of the driveway of my friend's house about three miles up the road from my house, shifted 1st- 4th just fine, went into 5th and got about two seconds of pull in that gear and then it neutralled itself out. Tried taking it out of gear and putting it back in and no workie. Must have stripped a gear or blown the gear apart. Luckily I wasn't far from home so I just cruised home in fourth. Looks like I'm not going to the MVPA convention in Louisville anymore.... I don't suppose it is possible to fix the trans without removing it? I do have a good parts transmission in the yard.

check for stripped/broken pins in shifter linkage, broken shifter rod. I had a JD 420 two cylinder dozer which directional reverser up and quit shifting....... had broken shifter rod, made new one with piece of shaft, drill press, and file. If you broke a gear you would have traumatic trans failure with pieces going everywhere. Hope something like a broken pin is the problem. Mark

Roger that. I'm going to pull the floor panel and trans top cover tomorrow morning. My wrenching spot is currently filled with a 929 that I just got running. It is leaving in the morning, then I can move the deuce over and tear into it. If the trans has to come out then I'm just doing a whole engine and trans swap because I have an LDS-1a with good trans attached to it sitting in a piece of frame waiting to be used. I just don't feel like doing that whole swap yet.

main shaft comes out easily with trans in truck. also counter shaft. what you cannot do is remove the input shaft without pulling the trans. now is a good time to upgrade the overdrive. LDS would have come with a trans that will not fit the deuce unless it has already been swapped.

Tom, I would LOVE to upgrade the overdrive with your kit right now, but I just can't afford it at the moment (unless you finance) I'm glad to know both of the shafts come out without too much headache. I wouldn't think the input shaft needs to come out, but we'll see. The donor motor and trans came out of a USMC truck, which I suppose is why it had the LDS and the fording kit, but it is a spicer 3053a behind the LDS.

I had my 5th gear go out too (where it kept wanting to pop out of 5th) I pulled the cover and saw the synchro gears had worn down. The gear's teeth should have been rectangular shaped when looking at them from the top but they had worn into a triangular shape so when under load it would want to push the synchro sleeve off the gear (or whatever that collar thingy is called). I ended up putting a take out trans in but have seen the synchro on eBay and I'm sure from the parts guys also.

Yeah I read that when I did my search on the subject ( before posting this thread). And my issue was totally opposite. Yesterday it started sticking IN gear. I would push in the clutch and try to pull it down into 4th and it would not come out of 5th no matter how hard I pulled. I found that if I let off the clutch and pushed in on it again it would come out of gear just like normal though.

either way your issue is probably related to the dogs on the gear and hub being worn off. that puts lots of metal in the oil so check everything else closely.

Failure identified: pulled the teeth off of the fifth gear slider. Hub seems to be fine. Already pulled the main shaft from my parts transmission and prepared for the swap and then the sky opened up... If I could just repair my truck once without it raining on me... Anyway, I SHOULD be back up and running by late tonight or early tomorrow morning.

Did you take any pictures of the swap and worn parts? I find it helpful when (not if, but when) I'll need to do the same fix myself!

I did take some pictures with my phone. I will post them up when I can get around to it. I did get it fixed, all back together and test driven by around 10pm tonight. Glad I had the parts I needed. Ended up using the whole loaded mainshaft, mainshaft bearings, and topcover from the donor transmission. Lucky too, because everything else in the donor trans was trashed. The parts I needed were the only good parts in it. Feels like a brand new transmission now.

Jeepsinker, Glad to hear you got your truck up and running again. Is it possible to buy parts for these transmissions(3053)? This thread has got me wondering if I should be looking for a spare transmission to have just in case.

Yep, find a spare. When you get it, open up the top cover and look at all the gears and such. If any have broken teeth, keep it and find another spare as well. Just make sure you have all the parts you would need if anything breaks. Two spares should be enough I would think.
