I will be driving my Deuce from NY (where it has been for temporary storage since I moved from Vermont) to the great state of Texas.

I plan to leave July 9th when all goes as planned. (Knock wood.) A friend of mine will be escorting me in another vehicle through Pennsylvania and perhaps a bit further.

It would be great to arrange lifelines, escorts, co-drivers, or whatever along the way. I will have tools and spares with me, but you never know. I will avoid I95 like the plague and take the westward route, which is a bit longer, but no way will I want to deal with that northeast corridor.

This is my provisional route although I am open to alternatives and refinement:

Loading your Deuce on that plane for $241 seems to be the fastest and cheapest option.

Okay, enough humor. On a serious note, I am happy to help as and if needed should your route change and you come closer to Houston.

I spent 10 hours driving my Deuce this past Sunday. It was a long day and I was worn out that evening. My advice is plan rest stops accordingly. How many days do you have to get this trip done?

I would love to get it done in three but four is probably more reasonable, barring problems.

Man thats a long drive for you and that truck. The price you are going to spend in fuel, hotels, repairs I would recommend looking into getting it trucked down.

I usually sleep behind the wheel for a couple of hours at a time at truck stops or rest areas., so no hotels, plus one person has already offered me their house to crash at about one day out from NY. Hopefully no repairs!

This will also be an 'I did it' for me. ;)

Through a cot with a lounge chair pad in the back. Some mosquito net might be good to have. Enjoy the adventure!

Do not take I-68 into west Virginia. Please not in a deuce. That is one bad bad route in an underpowered truck. Take 81 down to 40. It's about 30mi less but not near as many mountains and less chance of getting rear ended.

Or take 70 across to 71 to 65 to 40 its 22mi further than your current route you have posted

My longest big tactical trip was from the East valley in the Phoenix metro, to San Fransisco.

That was in my M54A1, about 1100 miles. I only stopped to eat & pee, with the two 76 Gal tanks (the old girl gets a bit better than 7mpg). 18 hours, with a 10-hour sleep at the end.

Be sure to take lots of water, it is amazing how much workout these old trucks extract from you. You'll get thirsty.

Earplugs. Pain relievers. Good tires & 2 spares. 2 big bottle jacks.

A good pair of shades really helps when driving Southwest.

One trick for 'air conditioning' in a deuce is to block the front window open about 3 inches and roll up the door windows. Air will be pulled in over the hood and pushed out down around the floor and the back of the cab, keeping the engine heat out of the cab. Wear goggles over your eyes or you may get grit in them (ask me how I know). That is how I made a trip from Ft Pickett, VA to Columbia, SC in August a decade ago. Temps were around 100 F that day.

Second on the pain relievers. I didn't drive my deuce the distance you are, but **did** haul an F850 boom truck with mine, it turned into about a 16 hour day and when I got out, I almost fell over from pain and cramping.

**GOOD** hearing protection and water as stated above.

Keep in mind most non-directional tires on the front will just about be worn out @ 5K miles.

That's why it is good to carry two jacks so you can rotate them to the rear every 1K mi.

I also recommend one of those 3/4" battery electric impacts (Earthquake from Harbor Freight) for the job. The air on a tactical just can't keep up with an air wrench.

Have a great trip , dove mine from MD to Yellowstone park MO and back pulling a camper with no problems , just do your maintenance and the truck will do the rest get her rolling set the throttle lock and the governor will keep here right there

You have your sights set on 3 days. They will be 3 long days as I don't think you are going to average the 62Mph that Google shows in a Deuce.
Follow Simp's advice on the route. He hauls more stuff with a military truck than anyone I know and I68 would suck in a Deuce.

When I sold a Deuce to a guy in TX he flew in and drove it back and I had given him extra belts and the truck belts broke about two states away.

Let us know if you take the I70/I71 route.

Yes, I was worried about I68 for a couple of reasons. Glad you chimed in.

Is it only I68 that is an issue? What about I79 in Morgantown and below?

What about picking up I 76 at Harrisburg and either taking I79 south in Pittsburgh or taking I70 west to Columbus?
