M1008 alternator

My 84 truck has previous to me been converted to 12 volts. Still has both alternators fitted but passenger side is not connected to anything. After removing it to change the fuel pump, I left it off as not doing anything, however this caused the ps to struggle & drivers side alternator to squeal. ( put it back and all ok ! ) Thought maybe move drivers side over to passenger side. Ideas anyone ?

Sounds like you need some help with the drivers side belts. Slipping on the water pump pulley. Getting the power steering belt tight is not that easy since there isn't much to pry on. Definitely tighten the power steering first. I do the pull to get tight from under against the mount bracket. Not the best but works. There was a tool that was made for decades that would grab the one side bracket but I don't think they make it anymore. There could be one of Google though...Kent Moore if I remember right.
Second is the alternator. That's easy to get tight. One thing I've found with the alt pulleys with years of running makes them no longer in the proper v angle. More rounded. So no matter what you do it squeals. Only fix is getting a new pulley. I like the solid ones but the stamp ones work too. Last is to check the crank pulley and water pump but those are probably ok since it was ok with the other alternator on.

A little help for the power steering.

If you look at the bottom adjusting bolt on the power steering pump, the bolt takes a 15 mm socket. BUT, on the other side of the bracket is the “nut” that the adjusting bolt threads into. You can put a 15/16 socket on that. Then use a ratchet strap from the ratchet and socket to the outer tie rod end to pull it tight and hold it while you tighten all the bolts on the power steering pump.

Based on your original post, it sounds to me that without the opposing pull of the passenger side alternator that the water pump shaft is getting pulled toward the drivers side causing the belts to slip. Your original idea of moving the drivers side alternator and wiring to the passenger side has a great deal of merit in that case to even the load on the waterpump.

That is my thought exactly, thank you. I'll post on here when I do it.

The water pump pulley getting pulled from both directions is probably why your passenger alternator was still installed.

I put the tool on upside down because I couldn’t figure out how to film and hold it the correct way. Then I forget to mention that during the video. 383 is the Thexton tool part number. I got mine from Amazon.
