Hi about to buy my first m1008. I'm in the UK, had plenty American vehicles in the past.
Want to find out what lettering / markings would be on it, someone said star on the doors but I've never seen one. Also what is the disc on the front grill for. And does anyone know the paint codes ( 1984, green ) thanks

Carc green 383 I think...

The disk in the grill you are referring to is part of the infra red light system on the truck.

Are you referring to the bridge placard on the bumper or the NATO slave receptacle? CUCV came with a small star 3"on the front bumper centered in the license plate area and a star on the back bumper to the side of the pintle hook. All left the Flint Michigan factory in 3 color camouflage. Every one was painted exact. I had seen a few prototypes that had a few different colors and pattern. Good Luck.

What part of the UK are you in? I'm in North Warwickshire with a 1008. Unless there's two for sale at the moment I've probably seen the one you're looking at buying.

I think cucvrus is the authority on the subject, but I'd agree on the camouflage. I've never seen photographs of trucks in US service in any colors other than NATO 3-tone or tan. Never seen any with stars anywhere besides small ones on the bumpers. The Air Force over here used a lot of plain green civilian vehicles, but all of the CUCVs they operated were camouflaged.

From what I've seen, unit markings stencilled in black on the bumpers was the norm for the 80s/90s, and the tan rectangles with black markings stencilled in seems to be what they shifted to in the 90s/00s. Would be interested to know if that's correct though, I almost wonder if the trucks with markings in tan rectangles were painted tan for Desert Storm and they just roughly masked over the markings when painting them camouflage again.

Hi, I'm in South Derbyshire (Burton on Trent) the truck I've looked at is in the outskirts of Birmingham. I've had a couple of airforce trucks in the past but both blue, a dodge w250 & a GMC sierra. I've got a Hummer H2 at the moment which is being sold, need something more simple & easier to work on !
The M1008 I want to keep stock which is why I'm asking about markings etc. Be good to find out which unit it was with & where.

I think a lot of the trucks in England will be ex-air force, it should have a serial number painted inside the driver's side door if it is. Unfortunately no easy way to ID where they came from even with that though.

My truck is Air Force, but it has US Army style unit markings on the front and rear, I'm considering painting them out as they're not original. There's references out there if you want to paint it up with Army unit markings on the bumpers, if you wanted to do it up as Air Force I believe they were mainly unmarked besides US AIR FORCE stencilled on the tailgate upper left, with the serial number on the upper right.

I'll have a good look round it. It's got the troop seats & stakebed sides with it and the aerial, jump lead , stater motor has been changed to a 12v one but still got the 2 batteries & alternators. Original one comes with it & a brand new seat cover. Been on most of the american truck / car forums / Facebook pages.

When you need parts, you want parts for a 1984 K30 with the J code 6.2 diesel, no matter if your truck was built in 84, 85, or 86.

Also download the TMs (Technical Manuals) for free. Top of the main forum. Did I mention that they are free?
