M1009 6.5 TD swap?

I was thinking...

With my 1995 6.5 TD donor with 208,000 miles that still runs top...

Should I drop that 6.5 in my M1009 instead of doing a 6.2/6.5 hybrid?

Would I need to put a 6.2 oil pan on the 6.5?

Will the exhaust manifolds clear the frame with Off Road Design Motor mounts?

What would I need to do to make this happen? Not many treads with this swap.

The oil pan will be fine.

The exhaust manifolds will fit inside the frame rails.

You will have to run a serpentine belt or change the water pump to run V belts.

Other than that, it will be the same fabrication required to add the GM turbo the 6.2 was going to require.

ok cool! What is that wire coming from the bottom of the timing plate cover on the 6.5?

where is the tach signal coming from on the 6.5?

That is good to know! Many years ago I installed phantom 2 gauges on my Diy4x dash with the tach and could never get a good signal. I will try this for sure as it seems cheaper:)

I might have a few dual alternator brackets to do the serpentine set up. I have boxes and boxes of 6.2 parts on my shelf’s.

Keep your eyes peeled on the wanted/for sale parts section.

I am vexed! I can not decide! What to build for my M1009! Help please!

Here is what I got!

1. Good running 6.5 TD with 208k miles

2. Good stock running 6.2 N/A J code 60k miles

3. Good highly upgraded 6.2 N/A J code 30k miles

4. Complete Banks Sidewinder turbo kit

5. Hx35w turbo.


Questions...

1. Should I refresh the 6.5 TD and finish the life on it?

2. Should I do a 6.2/6.5 TD hybrid?

3. Should I do the 6.2 with 6.5 Turbo components?

4. Should I do the 6.2 with Sidewinder?

What do you guys want to see me build?

My needs and budget is irrelevant since I have soooo many options, parts, willingness and knowledge.

What's been done to the highly upgraded 6.2? I have a 6.2 with the ATS turbo kit and am looking for a little more power.

What did you end up going with?
After I finish pulling out my 6.2 from the M1009 I’ll make a final decision.


Part of me wants to finish the life on the 6.5

Another part wants to do the Hybrid 6.5/6.2 Turbo build

The other wants a reliable proven sidewinder...

Im still split In 3rds...

There is a 4th of me that kinda wants to do the hx35w just to watch it blow up ;-)

What would you like to see me build?

The question was in my mind all day today...

Would a Hx35w fit a banks exhaust manifold?

Sure enough it does!

Now my mind is spinning!

Weird thoughts going threw my head...

6.5 lower end with 6.2 heads and banks manifold with Hx35w...

Then I was thinking some more...

The 6.2 heads have bigger exhaust valves allowing more exhaust to pass threw.


hmm...

On another note I could do a straight piped down pipe that would be at least 3” and lower egts even more...

But with all this thinking with this 95 6.5 block Precious knows that the compression ratios are too high and even with Arp studs, the compression would pull the Arp Studs right out of the block...

Unless we did lower compression pistons 18:1 which would be too costly for this 6.5 200k mile block...

Maybe with the p400 or Optimizer block we could achieve such greatness the hx35w can give...

It would take too much time to make the 95 block capable of handling that much boost.

It can definitely work but it wouldn’t work long enough to enjoy it. Maybe a year of life or less?

I am throwing the Hx35w dream out the door for now... Not practical for the earlier 6.5 blocks.

At work today, someone recycled an early model 6.5. 506 block. Broken crank and a huge crack starting from the bottom all the way up. Wicked!

The heads looked good. I might just take the heads. The precups look bigger too.

Been seeing a lot of 506 blocks with cracked blocks and broken cranks lately.

Went back for the heads. Precups are indeed much bigger

A couple of the precups are cracked. I read once on the diesel page that it should not effect anything? Can anyone confirm this?

Also found some cracks between some of the valves. Good or bad?

Cracks between the valves is what is most common on these heads and many consider them trashed at that point. I have heard of them being repaired by welding but not done much. If the heads are cracked, I wouldn't waste my time with them.

Ok. Great advice! I’ll remove the precups with a wood stick to prevent damage to the precups and put them in the 6.5 spare parts box and toss the cracked heads. Again...

Jobs done! Easier then I thought! Just saved myself at least $120 on bigger precups!

Then I went to my work and used a 3 step cleaning process on the precups.

1. Wire wheeled the tops.

2. Dunked them in the tank with paint thinner and brushed them clean of oil and carbon.

3. Sprayed them with brakekleen.

Bagged them and tagged them!
