I do tend to bounce around on things, you the right. I do believe that I have a touch of ADHD. That said, I installed the waste oil system myself and it I complex. I have read most of the toubleshootin for the FM 20.

Maybe clarifying my thought process on things and how I got to this point my be helpful. First thing I thought after the vehicle died was that my waste oil system failed in a strange manor. I then remembered that a safety feature built in is that when powered down all revert back to diesel. After that I then immediately thought that it could be lift pump failure because of the fact that I am running an old pump with hot oil through it. I then remembered that if the diaphragm on the pump fails that you dump fuel into the engine block and shoukd see some pouring out of block in some form or fashion. Or this was at least what I remembered hearing some where. This made the lift pump less likely to be a prb. I then came back and started reading. Knowing that I put 5 gallons of diesel on top of my 1/4 tank i also assumed this to not be the prob. Plus you do not get sudden switch like cut off when you run out of fuel. I then tuned my attention to peoples posts with similar issues. They were largely pointed towards injector pump issues; thus where I concentrated my efforts. There was one post in particular that sounded similar to mine and then I decided to start there. As I did one thing I then tried another. He belt issue seemed to be in incident all finding. It was staring me in the face hen I opened the hood. The starter bolt issue had nothing to do with troubleshooting but rather that a volt Brook while cranking.

When I tried one thing, is draining the IP looking for lack fragments mentioned in a similar post, rather than try the same ting oveagain I figured kill two bird with on stone...try to crank with the cover off a mentioned to another person and see if it fills. The IP reservoir did not fill, thus I started back tracking. All at that time people are giving suggestions and I am trying those I can a t time,ie, check the solenoid.

It has been a while since I had a DB-2 pump apart but isn't there a filter right at the inlet? If you are running WMO it is possible that you clogged that filter. These engines are not designed to run on anything but CLEAN diesel. While it sounds like a pump issue I also note what you said about vapor coming out of the intake. Are you sure this pump is turning? Have you pulled the plug to verify you do not have a broken crank? What glow plugs are you using? With all of the cranking you have been doing and the WMO burning if they were 11's then they are probably history. I would pull the glow plugs and at least check them. While they are out squirt a couple of shots of CLEAN motor oil in each cylinder and crank it a couple turns with the plugs OUT. This will give you some compression back, you will have washed the cylinder walls from all of the cranking. Put in a set of known good plugs and then fill the injection pump with fuel. Try starting, It should start on the fuel in the pump. Have you checked the return line for anything that may have fell on it and crimped it? Make sure the fuel return in the pump is clear.

Thanks for the input rick. I have not pulled the oil fill yet so I am not sure if I have a broken shaft. I was going based on not getting fuel to the pump rather than not getting it out, but that is a good thought. I am going to do as much reading as I can on the actual pump.
I did not check through things to see if it was the return that was preventing oil from making it out of the pump. I would assume it is quite possible that I had a bad solenoid connection as first suggested by ranchhopper (smart dude) which was not letting the fuel go out the front plus a clogged return line that is preventing pressure relief. That said, if that was true, I should be able to crank it with a full injector pump and the cap off? Shouldnt the pump fill with the cap off? When you say to check the return line for a crimp, I have checked the return starting at the IP to the metal return line then where it dove back off the top of the engine. From there I have not folled it further. Will have to add that to the list.

I did reread the proper way to install the cap of the IP and found that I went through the install backwars. Rather than start rearward and slide forward, I started forward and slid rearward. My assumption is that I had the switch essentially in the off position after getting the solenoid going again.

As for glow plugs....as far as this process has been...."whats a glow plug?" I have not pulled those and to be honest you are prob right that some are burned out. I know it is a no no, but I have not pulled them in the 3 years I have owned the vehicle, mainly because I am just now getting it truely going again. Shoulder surgery took me out of working on it for about a year and work for about 6 months.

If you have the cover off the IP it will not fill the top as its filled by the return line going into the top and if you crimp of restrict the return line it will not start. In fact if you ever have a problem and cant get the truck to shut off pinch the rubber line closed going into the pump cover and it will shut the engine down.

HOLY Thread resurrection batman. I have had a long gap in getting to work on my truck. Quick summary of the process for those who do not want to read through everything.

Driving down road on WMO/WVO after warming on diesel. Suddenly shut off after running about 5 min on alt fuel. Shut of like turning off the key (As much as I could tell that is, as they are very loud). Would not restart. Shreaded belt at same time (or so I think). Lift pump getting fuel to IP. IP not filling when cranking with governor cover off and not getting fuel to motor (as checked by taking fuel line off injector) Fuel shut off solenoid is working properly.

Thinking of pulling intake manifold off but a little intimidated by it. Trying to find out if anything I can do to trouble shoot things further before diving in.
The fuel linkage is freely moving. Should there be any spring back to the open position when moved to the closed position or vice versa? Does the shut off solenoid move it forwards and backwards?

Update. Fiddled with the shut off/governor spring and noted if pushed towards fire wall and release I get about 1/4 inch movement. Moved towards front of vehicle it does not spring back. Pushing accelerator moves it further forwards with only moving back to what I presume is high idle location. I think it is ok. Since I did not get any change in fuel level of Injection Pump with pedal to the floor and cranking, I assume the problem lies with getting fuel to the IP or in the IP itself. A little bit ago I checked the lift pump on the engine block and was getting fuel to the hose running up to the IP. This leaves me to assume it is the pump.

Pulled intake manifold and working on pulling pump. Not sure how this is going to go. May have to buy some more tools.

CRAP! Seized fuel pump. Apparently the shaft is broken. Any suggestions on replacement parts? Trying to find some. the guy I have it at seems to suggest I need a new core and start from scratch.

If its the fuel lift pump you're talking about and not the steel rod that drives it from the cam, make sure you buy an AC Delco pump. Do not buy a Carter, they are absolute garbage and fail prematurely.

Thanks hasdrubal but it is the injection pump. the big boy. Wish it were my lift pump. The guy said it needs a new head unit and shaft. He found me a core to rebuild for $200 which is over priced. Going to do some searching around on the site to see what most have been doing with them.

Nick 25,000 miles unless ODO rolled over which I doubt. Based on a piece of paper that came with tuck from maintenance depot and Carnac's report it seems true.

Searching the posts on rebuilding a pump. Trying to find out about if one with a busted shaft and reportedly seized pump can be rebuilt or if head and shaft have to be replaced. Got a local guy who was recommended by several mechanics in the area working on it.

Known fuel delivery specs.

All speeds are in engine rpm unless otherwise noted.
1. Injection pump operating speed is half of engine speed.
2. Injection pump rotation is counterclockwise.
3. Injection pump is timed to the outlet port in the 10 o’clock position when viewed from the transfer pump end.

The oem 6.2 pumps are 0.290 dia plungers - the oem 6.5 pumps are 0.310 plungers, marine-service pumps are available with larger plungers

ok guys. I need a little more help. TM -34. Pg 47. Part 123 Has 2 part numbers (62538 and 24623)
I assume one is for the acutal shaft and the other is for the piece on the end. What I cannot manage to find is what does this part number reference? I am trying to find a replacement vs buy rebuilt. Found a HMMWV shaft [FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]STANADYNE PART # 24645 . Of course this does not cross reference to these. I have found a head unit. Any help? OR am I better just buying a core and getting it rebuilt? I assume with a locked head my core is junk.
