M1070A1 & M1000 Walkaround

Yes. We have had them pop back in to gear while getting from link count and hooked up, had 1 soldier lose both legs above the knee. I've been training soldiers for 6 years. I thought we could share experienves. "As iron sharpens iron" is kinda the goal I was thinking of
I know exactly what your talking about. We rebuild the M1A1's engine out at MATES in FT. Riley (Im also a technician). They can "pop" into gear during idle when condensation enters the intake. A drop of water can force that battle tank to shoot forward 50 yards no problem with the hand brake on. Shame a Soldier got the tail end of that. I've seen it happen in a motorpool, the tanker started it and walked away to get another one. I was a lil private, so I just sat back and watched the madness. Worst thing I've witnessed on the HET was a female get her fingers cut off from the winch cable (her twin sister was running the winches). She bird nested the cable and was paying it in not listening to commands. Also seen a guy get knocked out from the winch after disconnecting it. As the winch gets "wind up" from towing in. lol. I didn't like that guy so I find it funny. He knew those cables can whip like a firehose with no one on it. Yup, got him cross the face, knocked out four teeth. Your bringing back how unsafe that equipment can be if your inexperienced, lol. My motto in my class is "Don't break the equipment, and don't kill yourself, be safe."

Last week somebody had the driver's side front axle hub come off.

They put the 1070A1 on a M1000, forgot it was too tall and took out some power lines on the way in. :whistle:

that is one of the improvements I had suggested for the A1s when I was at Oshkosh previewing/testing them; roller guides for the winches. We use the tanker bar to guide the main winch cables in, and have at least 1 person pulling against the cable to provide tension. I had a weird load once. we had to go recover an M88 that slung a rod through the block. so we had to get it where it sat. there wasn't enough room for us to get straight at it, and the CC said "were straight enough". being a specialist I couldn't argue much with the SFC, who had the 1st LT convinced. so as were winching it on, the cable came off the drum. that was fun!

I have some bad habits of my own, I run the winches with my feet, standing on the control box. this way I can see whats going on the deck. I had a scare doing this when I was younger. winching on an M1, my TC didn't thread the shackle pin all the way through. as I was pulling the M1 up so we could chain down the front, the shackle slipped, and the pin pulled the threads out. thank god it did this as I was paying the cables back out; the cable came flying back but hit the goose neck of the trailer and fell to the ground.

air down the rest of the tires, and ride low on your deck height. that should fix, for the most part, hitting power lines. while pulling a bobtail truck that went down on the highway to san Antonio (static displays of a Bradley and M1 for the PGA tour) we went under a bridge. the fresh air box of the loaded truck hit the bottom of the bridge and was taken completely off, being caught by the loading ramps of the trailer. that's crew had to pay for that mistake. I wish I had video of my "air born" incident. pulling an M1 to BLORA for a static display for 3rd ACRs home coming, I had to climb a steep, muddy hill with no run up to it. so I just locked it in and hammered down on it. there was a big lip on the road at the top of the hill I couldn't see. needless to say there was about 3 inches of day light under ALL of the systems tires! lol no damage occurred.

Have any of you guys seen the 6x6 global version ? .. Sounds like you do a few miles in the 1070 dieselfreak shame you didn't have a video of your airborne fun ... Would deftly be a YouTube sensation ... Or a hit on SS at least ... Are all the 1070 s (before the A1) the same or did they change as there build dates progressed ? When did the A1 first come into production ?

Have any of you guys seen the 6x6 global version ? .. Sounds like you do a few miles in the 1070 dieselfreak shame you didn't have a video of your airborne fun ... Would deftly be a YouTube sensation ... Or a hit on SS at least ... Are all the 1070 s (before the A1) the same or did they change as there build dates progressed ? When did the A1 first come into production ?
The 1070s are mostly the same, the largest differences seem to be related to whether or not they went through a rebuild -

- DDEC III/IV insead of the older DDEC II engine ECMs
- Separate speedometer and tachometer instead of the earlier tachograph
- LED taillights and marker lights
- Blackout marker lights removed
- Battery Disconnect Switch (Particularly Oshkosh rebuilds)

Some of the HETs were sold with air conditioning as well, but not too many. They typically had the added toolbox above the spare tire also. I think the rebuilds were done at Oshkosh and by Red River Army Depot. (RRAD) I believe the Oshkosh rebuilds to be superior.

It seems like the earlier production 1070s are the ones that were rebuilt, whereas the later production trucks have not undergone a rebuild. For the most part, this means the 90s trucks have DDEC III/IV ECMs and the 2000s trucks have DDEC IIs. I think they build 1070s from 92 until 03, but not every year in between.

I think the A1 started production in 2013.

Where was the recovery of that A1 at and do you know how this happened? The A1 was built with 8X8. but not true interlock 8X8. They kept the front axle as limited slip because Oshkosh was snapping the front axles. Also the 10 manuals does nothing but harp on "wheel slippage" and using the CTIS to control this accurance while on steep grades. Totally curious if you knew the story behind this. or was it poor maintanence reusing the spindle lock washer or better yet not even tapping those teeth on the washer into place. I do ponder.

It was in Marana, Arizona. I do not know anything else about it.

Could someone explain the M1000 APU? To be specific the DISTRIBUTION BOX 6110015143506.

Is the APU 12v rather than 24v? The only photo I could come up with as a tangle that showed a "box" with alligator clamp jumper cable coming out of it. Any good photos of this unit would be helpful it determining if I could "repurpose".
