I'd like to add an extension to the rear of my 1998 M1079 similar to the one Michael Ladden did on the Drive the Globe M1079. Has anyone else done this? If so, was your frame steel or aluminium? How did you attach it to the M1079 habitat? Is there anything that you would do differently?

I was looking into this the other day, take a look at this thread:

I'd stick with aluminum (like metals, for reasons). As far as connections, I would think bolting might save some work but welding might be preferable. But if you are welding you'll be removing foam from the walls in a number of locations (anywhere near your frame welds). The walls are an aluminum/foam/aluminum sandwich with an aluminum skeleton. To do an extension, you of course need to build off that internal frame.

I entertained doing a slide-out using the existing door frame. I liked the idea of having everything tucked in close to the rear axel (opposed to slinging that much weight out off the back of the truck).

consider going forward not backward (or both). AKA one fella (granted his was an Ambo box) made a front sleeping birth . Basically where a 1079 has the front hang over above the spare..... well he built a solid version of that and cut out top portion of front wall to match. Great use of space... ....
