M109A3 with no Turbo?

Hello all, new guy here. I went to check out a M109A3 that some guy was selling locally. He says he bought it 3 years ago from a outfit in Wisconsin that buys these direct from GL and then resells them. In any event I was confused because the dataplate on the dash says M109A3 but the engine is the Ld 465 non-turbo engine. I was under the impression all A3's were to have the LDT 465 engine. This is a Jeep M109A3 which I know for sure, but the date I was told is a 73 although I dont know how to verify that is there a date code that should be on the data plate somewhere to verify the year it was made or overhauled? I appreciate any help from someone willing to answer the "newbie" questions.

Yes, its possible to have an M109A3 without a turbo. My Kaiser Jeep presumably did not have one when it rolled out of the factory new in 1966, but got one during a rebuild in 1985. The turbos were added later to clean the air/exhaust. Look for small rebuild or overhaul tags riveted to the various drive train components. Some might be painted over, but most should plainly be visible.

Thanks for the info! Also I forgot to add the data plate picture. Can anyone decipher the mfg year from this plate? (Its pretty faded) The owner said it was a '73, but he also said it was a m109a2...

i never heard that. a3s have catapillar engines.

I think m109 a3's still have the multifuel engine. I have never seen one with the cat engine FWIW

forgive me if I am wrong but I believe the m109a3 still has the multifuel in it. The m109A4 has the Cat engine in it.

It is a little wierd but the M109A3 has the M35A2 chassis. Someone in the shop probably had a non turbo engine and put it in because they didn't have a turbo engine.

The M109A2'a I've seen are the LD-465's w/out turbos.

Not unusual to find an LD in there. The truck is a 71

Incidentally, while we're on the subject, I thought I'd mention the early LD-465 engines without turbo had rear exhaust. The frame on mine has at least one of the brackets and it looked like something had been bolted there.
