M1101 vs. M1102?

I have looked at the parts list of both trailers and there doesn't seem to be any difference between the two. So, how is it, that one is rated to carry about 2,000 lbs, while the other is rated to carry close to 3,000 lbs?

M1101 & M1102 Light Tactical Trailer
The Light Tactical Trailer for general cargo is designated by two model numbers, the M1101 and M1102, depending on its loading by weight. That is, there is no physical difference between the M1101 and the M1102 models, other than the dataplate. The two model numbers are used to regulate the Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW), based solely on the vehicle towing the trailer.

For example, when the GVW does not exceed 3,400 pounds (1542 kg) the M1101 cargo trailer can be towed by a HMMWV M998/M1038 series prime mover. Both the M1101 and the M1102 trailer models can be towed by a HMMWV M1097/M1114 series in accordance with the identification plate. Due to the numerous model differences, for military use operators must refer to TM 9-2330-392-14&P to determine towing authorization for the M1101 and M1102 for the specific set of circumstances.

The difference between the M1101 and M1102 cargo trailers is listed on the Identification and Shipping Plates.
The difference between the maximum Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) is based solely on the towing vehicle. All trailer models can be towed by a HMMWV M1097/M1114 series in accordance with the identification plate.
The M1101 cargo trailer and the trailer chassis can be towed by a HMMWV M998/M1038 series when the GVW does not exceed 3400 pounds. To determine which HMMWV can tow a chassis version of the HMT, look at the trailer data plate that identifies the total system weight. Use a modified light HMMWV if system weight is 3400 lbs or less. Use a modified heavy HMMWV if system weight is 3400-4200 lbs. There are no physical differences between the M1101 and M1102 trailers. Refer to table below for towing vehicle requirements.

b. The data listed on the Trailer Chassis Identification and Shipping Plates is different from both the M1101 and M1102 trailers. In addition, the trailer chassis has no cargo body.​

Alright, now I see what they did there. It's not the trailers but the towing vehicles. I get it.

TedG, I'm not sure I understand what you mean by 3 MWOs.

•MWO 9-2330-392-20-1 17 Aug 2001 modification is to provide a procedure for the installation of an upgrade for the original equipment surge brake actuator. It is replaced by an improved cast surge brake actuator with modified components.
•MWO 9-2330-392-20-2 18 Mar 2003 modification is to provide a procedure for replacing the rivets used to secure the landing leg mounting bracket. Bolts and nuts will replace the rivets.

I did the mwo for the landing leg on my two m1101 trailers. Very simple, takes about 2 hours start to finish. Check out this link for how to do it:

Where can I find blank mwo tags?

I thought I would add that in pm'ing one of my M1101 trailers, I found the surge brake plunger ( a "T" shaped part) to be broken. This would cause the surge brake not to work.

Your landing leg... It is different than others I have seen. Where the "attachment" to the trailer is, all the others I have seen that attachment is higher up on the leg than where yours is on the bottom. I wonder if it is a design change or a leg for another kind of trailer.

Both my M1101 trailers have this style landing leg. One has the wider wheel whereas this one has the thinner one. Both are 1997 dated trailers SN45xx and have all 3 mwo's done. Works good and does not interfere with hmmwv when turn a hard left or backing up.

I have a 1102 with two MWO tags, looks like the first two based on the bolts replacing rivets and a cast surge brake.

What is the last one "MWO 9-2330-392-35-1, Steel Draw Bar"?
