Howdy all,

As in my intro post, I bought a M1123 from govplanet. It is a roller and the price reflected that it definitely will need some work, which I am fine with. I generally find myself in the have more time than money category. Unfortunately, that sometimes leads to more spending, but I have had some good luck in the past on other projects. I had the HMMWV delivered a couple of weeks ago and have since been searching and learning about it as much as I can. Still have a lot of gaps to fill. I mostly focused on the fluids, what goes where and qty’s and what obvious parts are missing and needed to get it started.

I knew it was missing the rear prop shaft, serpentine belt and some other odds and ends listed on govplanet and pictures, but I figured a good once over will be needed. I have found that the union straps and bolts are missing from the rear diff, the fill plug is missing from the T-case and some other bits surrounding the t-case. The CDR (pcv) valve was also missing. Thanks to you all and the TM’s, I have been able to find the part numbers to these things and have ordered some.

I ordered a prop shaft(2520-01-459-0050) which according to the TM should be correct. However, when I tried to install it, it appears to be to long? I have attached some pics. So I consulted the TM again and noticed there are 2 shafts, depending on what T-case and if kit 57K3498 is installed. Does anyone have info on kit 57k3498 as I am curious what it is? I will be ordering another prop shaft here soon, 2520013575044 unless some one here has more insight?

Edit: From a quick look, it appears the 2 shafts have different tooth counts? 28 (2520013575044) vs 32 (2520-01-459-0050)? The 32 slipped right into the t-case but is to long, so what gives?

In the mean time I will focus on the fluids and filters till the new parts show.

Welcome to the Outfit!

Looks like you have a pretty good looking rig. Definitely nice that you have already downloaded the TM's and started going through them... Yep, everything gets drained. Every gearbox gets drained and some of them get the plugs put back in them - and others don't. No biggie. Pipe plugs are pretty easy to come by, The CDR valve is going to be pulled as part of the De-Mil process.

As far as the wrong prop shaft is concerned, you should be able to return it and swap it for the shorter unit. Looking at the picture though, I think that one should fit..

Anyhow, welcome to Wrench Turning 101

Ok, here is what the TM lists.

For the M1123, UOC NNN, I need prop shaft 2520014132724 and I ordered 2520014590050. Explained! No. I see some vendors list those two shaft as the one and the same and other don't. I appears that there are a lot of liberties taken with these PN's?

From what I can tell I need:
NSN: 2520014132724
PN #: 12447113
Dana PN#: 919588-2204

IIRC the 28 tooth is for the 10K trucks with the 10K 242 transfer case, the 3 speed is shorter than the 4 speed.
I think the shaft you ordered is for the 10.3K 242 when installed in the 3 speed trucks so it would be longer than the standard A2 shaft.
Then again I could be completely wrong

The UOC is your friend when looking up HMMWV. :D
Thanks again for the tip on the UOC's, got a new prop shaft order and installed. Now continuing with all the fluids. The brake bleeder nipples are proving to be a PITA but will soak them in PB Blaster or something. The a batteries that came with were pretty dead and I will see if I can get any life out of them.

Quick update,

I ordered a new driveshaft that fits, thanks to Gayfang and the extra tid bit regarding the TM. I also got both batteries to life and was able to cranked the engine. I tried to find all the spots that they might have opened up for draining the fluids but once I got to starting the engine, I noticed quite a few spots I missed. This weekend I actually got it started and running for a few minutes without any immediate visible leaks. And before you ask, yeah the fluids are all at the correct levels and not drained out. :p
I do however do not have any drive, so that is the next thing to check out. I will keep you all posted.

For those wondering, my second M1123 got delivered few weeks ago, but I have not done much on it. Figured get one going then focus on the next.

It is highly advisable to replace all fluids if they are still in the systems. Unless you know for sure how long it's been since last replacement, and the operating conditions since...

Did some quick looking today, appears I am missing the TCM capacitor. Could not find it in one of the TM's but found it elsewhere. I will see if the second M1123 has one and borrow it.

Even if it’s missing the tcm it should still go into gear. Reverse and at least 1st and second going fdw. Is the transfer case engaged ?

Yeah, the case is engaged. I tried in H and HL. I don't get the trans light to light up in the run, bit not started condition. I am probably not getting power to the tranny, so I will start looking. My next steps are to check the breaked and relay

Is there fluid in the trans ? Even after topping off if it was drained it could take like 12 quarts if the tork converter was drained. As soon as you put it into drive it would take all the fluid into the tork converter. There could be another issue with a broken input shaft / output shaft transfer case issue. Is there any metallic looking objects in the oil ? They sent it to surplus for a reason. Hopefully it’s just still low on fluid
