Anyone know of a museum with a running M1A1 Abrams tank?

I just got a power control unit for one and would like to donate it.

I would kiss the feet of anyone who owns an Abrams privately.
I am sure there are musuems with displays about the Gulf War. They may be interested to get this piece you have just because it is from an M1A1. I know the Veterans Memorial Museum in Branson, MO has a Desert Storm section.

My last unit had a M48 on static display....in order to draw it from the depot where it had been rusting (and awaiting an appointment at the target range) it had to be rendered inoperable. Batteries removed, fluids drained and the engine "demilled" to where it could not be repaired.

My guess is that the logistics of keeping an Abrams running would be beyond the capability of a museum (even a government one). That is assuming that the powers that be would allow one in operating condition to be off of a military installation.

You might give the Patton Museum a call.

As far as an MV goes, an Abrams is prob the last thing I would ever want to own myself. Don't get me wrong, I would play on one all day, but running one even just to keep the batts charged would drain a small fortune VERY quickly.

We had running jokes in the motor pool on how many hundreds of thousands of dollars in parts we changed since the last field problem. Never mind the 7 gallons to just start it.

The PCU isn't small or light, it mounts behind the driver's seat and takes up most of that area along with the slave box and some breakers. I am sure someone would pay the shipping if you are going to toss it.

I was checking the Ft. Benning museum when you wrote that, and they kept mentioning the patton, so I wrote them with pics. I asked for an honest appraisal if they could or would put it up on public display, and made it clear I don't want to donate just for it to sit in a back room somewhere to collect dust.

I'd rather mail it to Chris. At least someone would get to enjoy it that way.

I was told there was a man near Sparta, WI that owns one privately, but have yet to prove that statement. Even though coming from what I believe to be an honest source, I am still very doubtful.

Would be quite awesome though.......to play with. Not to maintain. lol

How does one find the D Mil code. I'm not seeing it. Also, since it was brought up and I don't know, I have to play it safe and donate to a military museum.
I'm still waiting to hear back from Ft. Knox.

The tag on it says it was brought in and tested as being good. I'm sure it was not a depot level testing, but probably Intermediate level.

He has all kinds of tanks but no M1A1. (yet I hope)
He also has a running M60. I scored a short ride in it once .
I hadn't even put M60 ride on the bucket list and was able to check off that one.
I can only imagine how much fuel a M1A1 goes through. The M60 isn't a cheap date.

As far as I have heard,...ALL.... rebuild-able M-1's and their variants are sent
back to the Lima,Ohio tank factory to be re-capped and upgraded for re-use.
just as almost all the HEMMT's are being sent back to Oshkosh and re-capped into
newer versions. While this cuts us collectors out of fun new toys it does
(FOR A CHANGE) make sense for the Defense budget. Which is not in keeping

Someone correct me if I'm wrong...DMIL code is meaningless after uncle sugar gives it up. case in point..look up the dmil on an STE/ICE-R.

Tankland is probably a best bet. i'd offer to pay for shipping, but there's a croud ahead of me with dibs already on it.

I was told by more than one DRMO personnel that anything that has once belonged to the U.S. Gov't is technically still theirs if they re-call it to them
under "IMMINENT DOMAIN" this has raised many an eyebrow when I have
mentioned it in the past as I am sure it will now.
I had a good friend that bought an M-114 APC that came out thru D.O.E.
had good paperwork with it,thru reputable dealer. The D.O.D. said the
D.O.E. was supposed to return it to them for DE-Mill. D.O.D. sent a tractor trailer and they drug it on it destroying it in the process,while my
friend who just spent 3 yrs of his life and many $1000.00's of dollars
restoring it watched in HORROR!!! He took it to court and a Federal Judge ruled in his and others involved s favor,but they did not get the property back or any compensation..............My friend quit the hobby and won't even look at a military vehicle anymore. So take what I am saying to heart or don't.

That's enough to give you the willies!!!! I guess since I'm used gov't property they can recall me at any time as well. Hope they don't send a flat be to come get me....sounds too painful

Actually ownership and possession are two entirely different things. The DOD 1033 program allows qualified agencies to possess certain surplus DOD equipment, according to the terms of the DOD 1033 program. All equipment under this program is basically loaned to the receiving agency and must be returned when the agency no longer wants or needs it, with all expenses of transport both ways being on that agency. I have heard of several sales and auctions of equipment on this program, so there definitely will be more stories like the one you mentioned. I know it sucks but thats the way it is

There have been lots of equipment that was sold off by the govt in years past as scrap, demil surplus or other designation, and are still legally and privately owned today. The major difference is that stuff was sold, and everything on the 1033 program was loaned.
