m35 multifuel oil change

hello chaps can anyone tell me why when i changed the oil in my m35 multifuel truck the dip stick level shows the same when i first put the oil in without the oil filters filling up with oil as when i started the truck ran for five mints and diped the stick again and it still showed the same level what is the sumo capacity for this engin as it looks like i have only put about 3 english gallons of oil in here also when i changed the oli the filters were clean and the canesters looked dry yet the dip stick reads oil ful

3 gallons? well for one its not getting enough oil in the engine. if i recall it supposed to be 22 quarts. ( 5 1/2 gallon) to check oil level when its not running and still cold oil full is actually at the "K" on the word "CHECK" on the dipstick. They say to run it for a minute then shut off and check oil levels to be in proper spot on dipstick. But a way to cheat and be safe on the engine is to check oil level on the "K" before you start it. Hope that helps

On the flip side,when the engine is really warm, the oil is at the "Full" line when correctly topped off. This is hot engine and hot oil, and you must check it within one minute of shutdown when hot.
Shell "Rotella-T" or "Rotella" 15W40 is a really good oil for these engines but the grade is what is important over brand name, unless you are in cold climates all the time.

The filter canisters have inside, drainback holes in the block casting about the size of a quarter under each canister, thus while thinking the whole system is charged and the canisters full, that is not the case, the oil has easily and quickly re-drained back into the sump. As said in the other post, the dip stick has instructions stamped into the blade and I do also believe it was 22 quarts. When draining and under the Duce be aware that you have TWO sump drains, one in front and one behind, with the tie rod seperating either bank. Get them both, as the rear one holds about a little less than a gallon as well. As said about the canisters, they drain back into the block very rapidly by virtue of such a large drain-back passages, thus the canisters are empty and as you unscrew then and remove them there will be little ior NO leakage. In other words the oil change is really not very messy at all. When I changed mine last month, it sounded and ran noticeably quieter and smoother, there was a discernable difference in the before and after sound of the motor.
