I just bought and drove home a 1968 M756A2 pipeline construction vehicle.

It is missing a few parts in the rigging, which I am in search of, such as: the trunnion, turbo, sides, and tail gate. It has an extra winch on top, that I plan to remove and possibly use as trading materials

The pipeline trucks are really neat. Army Motors had a great article about them last year.

Before you strip parts I would see if someone would swap for a standard deuce because the 756 is getting hard to find.

Nice! By extra winch on top, are you referring to the behind cab mounted 20K winch and headache rack? That belongs there. Enjoy the LD engine, I miss the one I had.

I wanted one of the M756's out of the Jack Tomlin collection but couldn't get any straight answers from the broker. I wonder who got them.

Don't part out a M756 if you can help it, they are getting very hard to find in decennt shape, and yours looks pretty nice.

Congrats on the acquisition, more pictures, please (and higher res if possible). My favorite deuce variant, for sure, built three different wooden beds for them over the years.

I don't think he has any intention to part this truck. The winch he wants to remove was added to the top of the headache rack. You can see it in pic 2. If he knows what a trunion is for one of these, he knows exactly what he has for a truck.

Thanks, clinto, I will have to look up that article.

I have no intention of raping this beast, but it is going to have to be a working, and camping, truck; so the extra winch added to the top of the headache rack will have to go. It is clearly a later add-on, and inadequately engineered, so it would just rip off if I every used it. The winch is not even connect to a drive shaft anyway, nor is there a provision for one.
It is usually a long search, especially for the trunion.
Thanks, Recovry4x4, for the photo of the tackle. I will have to track it all down. If the trunion is so hard to find, then hopefully someone has the specs and a machinist could make it.

No, here are 2 photos of the 3rd winch

I would be happy to post more photos, but I am not sure what people want to see closeup, so just let me know. I also do not know what resolution you want. I own a 14mega pixle DSLR, and I am a photographer, so I can make the resolution at whatever level people want. Just let me know. I made the above images 8"x at 72DPI. Is that good enough?

Actually, I have been an engineer for 40 years, but never came across the term 'trunion' until I started researching here about my new rig. The sad part is I know I have seen this trunion somewhere in my past, probably at a scrap yard. Now I know what to look for when I see one, so I am going to scrounge the scrap yards for one. If I cannot find it in 6 months, then I will have to order one machined.

When I was looking for a truck I was just looking for an M35a2 with certain features and had planned on building a small crane for it to handle the equipment that I plan to load onto its bed. I did not know about the crane on this truck until I went to look at it, and the owner showed me how it worked. I got so excited, I just bought the truck without inspecting it further, which was a bad idea, because I had a blowout on the way home at 65MPH. That was more excitement than I can handle in a lifetime.

Member desertdeuce resides in AZ and he has a nice example of the M756A2. I'm not sure if he has a trunion for his. The only one I have ever seen is the one I had for my truck. Desertdeuce hasn't been active on here in a while but it might be worth tracking him down to see what he has. It would be cool if someone could write a program to make these.

Edit, he has a trunion. http://www.steelsoldiers.com/showthread.php?30015-M756A2-Pipeline-Truck-Arrival&highlight=

what is the trunion for? Nice truck!
The trunion is the piece that joins the 2 gin poles together to form the A-Frame. The hoist block attaches to the bottom of the trunion. Using a clever pulley and block arrrangement, you can raise and lower the A-Frame via the mid mount winch.

Thanks, I saw Desertdeuce's thread on his M756A2. I sent him an email to see if he is interested in discussions and/or trades.

Sweet, your extra winch is a Braden LU4 for a M37 or M715. Can I have it?
The extra winch is definitely up for trade for the things I need, tronion, rigging and/or turbo

From what I can tell, the trunion joins the two arms of the crane together and provides a link to a pulley, through which the rear winch cable is passed.

I'm at work with no photos and locked out of photobucket. If you search photobucket recovry4x4 you should find a link. I think I have a pic of the gin poles attached to the trunion.

I found your photos on photobucket. From examining my gin poles, and your set of photos, it looks like there might be a missing part. Here are photos of the ends of my gin poles

One gin pole has this piece of junk welded onto it
M756A2.1745.3.jpg
The other gin pole is free. The hole in the gin pole is 1.50". The square hole in the side of the round hole appears to functions as a kind of key hole to lock something in place, and I suspect it is a locking cap with a bearing that holds the trunion in place, and locks the two poles together. Is there a manual for the rigging for this piece of equipment somewhere, here?

Your left side pole is stock and as you said, the right side had some bastardization to it. The trunion has tabs on each round end that slide through the keyways. Once you have the trunion through both, you simply rotate it to lock it in place. The block pulley is pinned to that with a 1" pin. I wish I had taken more pics of the setup before I sold everything but I certainly have more pics at home.

The 1965 series of TM 9-2320-209-10 and so on are your best sources of info on the pipeline truck. There were 2 different versions of the -10 from the same date. One had a seperate chapter on the pipeline truck.

I have (somewhere) a photocopy of some field testing of the pipeline bed on a gasser chassis. It shows quite a bit of info. I will try to find that and get a copy available.
