I'm digging for information and not having any luck. I have a set of 5 tons with air brakes and I'm wanting to switch em to hydraulic brakes for my build I'm doing. I have located a set of new fully loaded hydraulic backing plates ( plates, shoes, cylinder and hardware ) . My issue is I'm wanting to use the drums off the air brakes on the new hydraulic backing plates because my drums are dang near new same as the rest of the air brakes, which all look new ( shoes, springs, cylinders ).
So my big question is can I use the brake drums off the air brakes with the hydraulic backing plate, shoes, wheel cylinders and hardware ????

Drums and shoes are a different width.

Why are you wanting to get rid of the air brakes? Been thinking of going to airbrakes on my m816.

Im putting the 5 tons under a dodge ram and its my daily driver, the reason i want to switch to hydraulic brakes is to use it with my stock hydro boost master cylinder set up. The bad thing is the air brakes look like they are dang near brand new just like the drums which are new which is why i want to use the drums. I took the air brake backing plates and all off in one piece so they are for sale if some one wants them.

I would be glad to give you my hydro brakes in swap for your air. are the axles open, as in not attached to a truck??? or is this just some parts you dug out of BFR or a Junkyard

My axles are already torn down in the garage and im refreshing them. The brakes are off and ready to swap to hydro brakes. I m wanting to keep the axles just swap brakes.

yeh, I figured, more so just poking fun with you, but if you were willing to come up here and do the work of pulling mine and installing the axle portion I was going to offer a bed, shower, and food, and some hands on help. Mainly as my 816 is down due to the crane CV shaft breaking, so its parked right next to my garage with air/electric access, and blue wrench..... Trucker buddy of mine has a couple scrap semis I could rob the other air related parts off of, to get it working.....
wife runs a bed and breakfast out of the upstairs of our house,,, half joking but was offering a wrenchcation with a view of Devils Tower

Well I just did some measuring and talked with several mechanics about this issue and...... The hydraulic brake shoes are 5-1/2" wide and the air brake shoes are 7-3/16" wide leaving 1-11/16 of clearance and the shoes naturally ride on the back side of the drum so the general consensus between everyone I spoke with today says the air brake drums will work with the hydraulic brake backing plates and shoes.

Man, I had all those parts last year when I converted my M818 to full dual circuit air brakes. I ended up putting them out for the scrapper guys.

For you, Brother red...from when I did the upgrade to my truck. Any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.
M809-series, M818, Air Brake Retrofit
Thank you. Not to thread hijack too much but how do you like their performance compared to the old design?

Yeah that's the problem that's what happens to most of em scrap pile bound cuz the weight is there.aua

Any good places to buy new drums by chance????

Exactly! With he weight, I expected I would never be able to sell them. The market would be to narrow and what are the odds someone local to me would need them. I absolutely hate putting stuff out for scrap, but it is hard to hold on to such heavy and bulky items. All I have left, are two front drum adapter plates and two hubs. I used M939/M939A1-series front hubs and drums because the wedge brakes are an easy swap. There are no S-cam set-ups for those Rockwell top loader steers.

Light years ahead...I sent you a PM with details, Brother.
