M915A1 rear axle seals

I had an inside oil seal leaking on right rear. Pulled it apart and inside seal had been damaged when military rebuilt. Axle flange had rtv sealant only. No gasket or seals. Parts manual shows outer oil seals just under axle flange. They consist of 2 paper gaskets and an 8 hole metal oil seal that sandwich together when axle is installed. What is the purpose of this type seal?

The outer seal was used to keep the bearings in grease and the axle oil separate.

I leave em out and make em oil bath

Ok, Thanks for the quick reply Wes! That makes sense. I could not figure out why that seal was necessary for the oil bath.
It was a standard 915/916 part.

Similar to what the 5 ton uses. The military original idea was to keep oil and grease separate and use that seal to prevent water intrusion etc.

They don't work IMO and lead to burned up spindles etc.
