M916 not so scary now

About 2 days of detailing has resulted in a rather nice truck. This unit came from Ft Polk a few weeks ago, and at first I was not sure she was a keeper. Well that has changed now, we have bonded. I'm getting better and better with the 7155 transmission; I followed everyone's advice and now I think I know the tricks.

Glad to here it,I am picking my M916 up this tuesday.I cant wait to get it home.

You need any help let me know, I have the tow bar for these monsters now.

It takes a little time to get use to shifting them, but the more you drive them, the more you'll like them!

Great score NDT, wish I could have got one!

Told ya just drive it and you will bond and become one.
On mine just the front tadem has the locker and I like to roll through the tight turns without power. Is you drop box cooler getting warm. That will let you know if the pump is pumping. If you decide to change out the oil in the drop box I like to take out the T fitting compleaty not just the plug and inspect the screen that is built into it.

Glad you are liking your M916! I'm in the process of video taping our M920 during cold start up (it sounds REAL nice) and will get some in cab shots going through the gears, using jake brake on 6cyl/high setting etc. We removed the muffler and added a 5" straight with a 7" turnout which sounds pretty throaty at idle and through the gears. The jake brake sounds like it should for a truck of this size now! I should hopefully have something linked to our website and on youtube by Sunday.

I should also have our tech manual downloads for Multifuel powered M35a2, Cat powered M35a3 and M809 Cummins powered 5 tons on our site soon also. If somebody has a spare M915/916/920 tech manual CD they can burn me I'll put these online for all to download also. Any other ideas for our website please PM me as I'm all ears!

Once you get the hang of "Slap Shifting" the CAT it is great.....you can really make the beast move on out.....she is gear bound but will pull one **** of a load (we pulled a D-7 dozer with ours).

If your truck has not been modified (there was a MWO put out on them) be aware that if the air pressure drops below 80 PSI the CAT will shift into neutral....bad news if you need the braking power of the engine on a downgrade.

I kinda wish my new M915 had the CAT in it but if they break it is hard to find a CAT House that can work on them. Parts can sometimes be an issue too.

Really nice looking M916.

in a nut shell - whats the trick and what does slap shifting entail?
You accelerate....ease up off the throttle (not completly off) cup your right hand around the shift lever and gently slap the shifter into the next highest slot.

1-5 is Low Range (if I remember correctly) and if you are loaded you need to use all the gears....if you are bob tailing or lightly loaded you can skip a gear or two in Low and High ranges.

Downshifting is the reverse.

It's hard to explain but if you watch someone do it a few times it becomes instinctual, just like driving a manual trans.

thanks Wreckerman......sounds like shifting one of my cars - back when I was a young lad and the automatic had a bad modulator

just for information sake - I wonder....is there any kind of a safety interlock to prevent downshifting too much and twisting the drive shaft off?

The tranny is somewhat idiot proof.....it will not drop into a lower gear if you are exceeding the speed for that gear(at least the ones I drove in the Army wouldn't).

This does not take into account the ingenuity of evolving idiots.

I like the CAT tranny as long as someone else has to pay the bill to fix it.

sounds like fun to drive them. wish i can experience driving one of them. the way it sounds, it don't seem hard to get the hang of shifting one.
