We are looking at possibly getting a M916A3 for the fire dept to replace a tanker converted from a fl120 freight liner tractor that is shot. The dnr located a few. I'm having trouble finding good info on these. I read some places it has a 7 speed transmission and others a 4 speed? Also what is top speed for one? What are the changes between a a1, a2 and a a3. Are there any common problems to look for on these?

The M916A3 is still a currently in use truck - I think I've seen only one come out on GL. It has an Allison HD4070 7 speed transmission.

Idiotic but there have been several in the surplus system. Most get snapped up by FD and gov't thru DOD surplus or GSA surplus by those paying attention. IE never make it to govliquidation. Not that many bought by Sam.

The one I saw on the North East Coast sold for over $45K on GL .

If you want more info look at TM 9-2320-302-10.

We have two sitting in our Motor-Pool right now. Top speed is 63 mph(Military programed computer) and ice cold AC.

I love these trucks.....They had about seven of these right out of rebuilt sitting at DRMO in FL about 6 months ago. Now I only saw four on the lot last week. They maybe shipping them out of state to other units that need them also.

We are working to have our MTOE Changed for some new equipment to use the more powerful M916A3 than the M983A4.
