M931A1 Recovery Shreveport, LA to Hannibal, MO on 2021-03-26

I am looking to bring home a M931A1 next weekend.
The truck is a low hour machine out of Louisiana and home is in Missouri. that puts the drive right at 700 miles.

Any advice for the recovery other than the basic filters, fluid, standard tools, jack and wheel chocks i should bring with me?
its coming with 3 extra mounted tires and i may pickup the owners m105 trailer as well...

Bring a sledge hammer in case any of your hubs lock up...

When I picked up my M923, that was the only issue I had driving it home.

Bring extra motor oil, tools, someone in a chase vehicle and hearing protection. Don’t try to go fast. Enjoy the ride. My M934 likes 50 mph. I can push it faster but it just seems to purr at 50.

Make sure to have a functioning spare and that the tire davit has what you need to drop the spare. Tools to change spare tire and a glad hand with coupler and air hose. AAA likely will have little interest in helping with a flat.

Congratulations on your new truck!!

I would definitely spend a bit of time thumbing through the -10 (Operators Guide) Technical Manual. That helps get your head around the levers and switches. Simple things like wondering why you don't have brake lights... Have to turn on the lights (how the heck does that work!?) for the brake lights to function. The TM will tell you that sitting in your recliner. BE SURE that you know how to activate the brakes. Ignore the red knob, but that yellow one is important when you want your new girl to stay where you put her :cool:

An extra few gallons of oil - just in case. Inspect the inside of the wheels from under the truck looking for wet spots. If the truck has been sitting for a while, you might see dirt covering the wet spot. Or maybe none at all hopefully.

BE SURE to check the transfer case and all three "pumpkins" for the proper level of 80/90wt gear oil. Running for 700 miles on low oil will make the truck and you unhappy.

Others here have already chimed in about spare parts and hearing protection, not being in a hurry, tools and some sort of chase vehicle. I would recommend when you head out that you find somewhere out of the way - maybe 20 miles down the road toward home - to pull over and walk around the truck. Take a peek under it too. Anything dripping? As you do your walk around, feel the hubs for heat. Is one warmer than another? Warm is normal. HOT is bad in ten miles.

Maybe check again in another 50 miles or so. Same checks. Being able to find something before it starts smoking. Gaining more confidence, maybe a hundred miles this time with the same checks.

Have some fun. Take some pictures as you make that trip home and upload them here. That will make the adventure exciting for all of us!

it has the spare on the truck and 3 additional mounted tires going with it. i do need to pick up the glad hand coupler though.

Congrats on the new truck the 939 series are very nice easy to drive trucks and the noise in the cab is seriously about 1/4 the noise in a Deuce cab. Like was said check ALL the fluids and lubes make sure that you have a jack capable of lifting what needs lifting and DUCT tape its a rag top and if its been sitting for a while in the sun the sewing gets weak and your top will separate at the windshield, Duct tape will fix it!
Enjoy the drive when I picked up my first 925A1 I drove it 500 miles and like was said they sure seem to purr at 55 to 59 mph dont be in a hurry and just enjoy getting to know your new ride!!

Duct Tape: Makes things that move stay still

WD-40: Makes things that won't move will move.

Gotta have some of each. Just in case!

It is lining up to be this weekend with arriving Friday afternoon and driving back evening and sat.
what is the best way to find members along the route?

OH!!! May be a little late on the game, but headlights/marker/brakelights! Few, if any, parts houses will have the headlights you need due to simple supply and demand. There's not a lot of demand, so they don't supply them... 🤷‍♂️

Some may not work and you'll need them.

I'll be home Wednesday from offshore and will be replacing mine with new ones (from Memphis Equipment ((yes, that's a plug!)).

I'm a few hours south, but if you need a headlight or 2, the pair I'm pulling off is fine, just one of them doesn't have low beam, but will get you home. Let me know and I'll possibly be able to meet your chase truck and hand them off.

One other thing - since you brought it up (kendelrio actually made me remember) about lighting...

Your brake and signal lights are NOT on if your lights are not on.

TM (the -10 book suggested earlier) will tell you that. But, before you go crazy trying to figure out why the turn signals and brake lights don't work - that is your "easy button" solution of the day :cool:
