Hello everyone,
My latest project is a 1991 M936A2 and I'm having some trouble. All the issues so far I have been able to fix and have been very straight forward. The truck last served in the reserves and unlike the rest of the trucks I purchased it was poorly maintained. Every other grease fitting is frozen and it doesn't look like it's been used much in quite some time. I would even bet it once served in a salty environment.
I have only had it for a week and I have worked through every problem I have encountered with the exception of one big one. I cannot get the crane/rear winch PTO to engage. Before I start pulling things apart I thought it would be a good idea to run it by all of you. I have all the manuals on the truck and I think I'm doing it right but I still cannot get that rear PTO driveshaft spinning. (I can get the front PTO to work for the front winch)
What I have been doing is to start the truck, set the parking brake, keep the truck's transmission in neutral, put the transfer case in neutral, push the main PTO control lever to the left of the driver's seat toward the rear of the truck, put the truck's transmission in 1-5 and set the throttle to high (1300 or above). I think at some point I can hear the PTO engage meaning I hear something but when I look under the truck that PTO isn't turning.
I should add that when the PTO lever is pulled back I hear air escaping. I assume that is to set the spring brakes like it says in the manual.
Any help would be appreciated, I would hate to start pulling things apart only to find out it was something simple. I did call the previous owner who is a small used car dealer and he assures me he had the crane operating at one time. I asked him what he did but he said it was over a year ago and he doesn't remember.
Thanks in advance
