M936A2 Transmission Fluid?

I have a 936A2 that is just out of rebuild, 16 hours. The transmission is about a quart low, when checking it, I can't tell what it is? It is almost clear with a slight golden tint? Any idea on what I should top it off with? I have done a search but I don't think it is gear oil and it has no tint I am familiar with in ATF.

There are many threads on this subject already but since he is asking about the wrecker I will say that as it has 100 gallons of 10wt on board that is what I would run and also because the wrecker is much heavier and will see much more hard use I would stay with the oil instead of the ATF as that is what is recommended for hard use. Also what they originally came with new the military changed what it was using in them for logistical reasons to 15w40.

10 has been used in these Trans's in many climates for many many years and for millions of miles, And never has had a PM about failure because there were none. Just a note :)

So what would be the advantage of Tractor hydraulic oil over Dextron? Tractor supply has it for $28/5gal. I use it in my Fordson Major tractor and love it.

My A2 has motor oil in it now and shifts "OK" but shifts better after 10-15 miles so here in Wyoming its warming up right before I hit town and was harder to shift most of the way in.

Also I'd live to change it twice before the month is over. Should I drain and fill with the tractor hydraulic oil first and run then drain/fill and filter after a few weeks? I have 26k on the truck and it was completely serviced right before I got it. I doubt the filters have 1K miles on them.

Changed to hydraulic tractor oil that meets Alison spec. Shifts better on these -25 to 20F days.

It's a cargo troop model and won't see much heavy duty work.

Now to just get the CITS fixed.

I drained the 10WT out of mine and replaced with the Allison approved Hydrulic Fluid from Tractor Supply at the reccomendation of my local Allison Dealer . Just a fluid drain and external filter change at there reccomendation they said not to change internal filter till next fluid change. I immediately saw a big difference in cold weather and warm weather shifting it is shifting way smoother now .

I just spent an hour looking for one of my old posts on this site from about 18 months ago,but couldn’t find them. I’ll just give you the Cliff Notes version.


In Nov. of 2011 I drove my M923A1 from Georgia to Texas where we left it for 13 months at my daughter’s place. In Dec. of 2012 we went down there from Denver, CO and drove it home, well home minus 16 miles. It was storming from Albuquerque, NM to Denver, so we decided to go up through OK and KS. We hit -20 degree temps in Hays, KS and had to layover for two days. That was when I noticed the transmission hesitated when shifting out of low gear.

Leaving out a lot of details, we stopped overnight in a Walmart parking lot, 16 miles from the storage yard because it was 2:00 AM and the yard was closed. The temp was still below minus 10. When we pulled out of the lot two mornings later, the transmission quit completely. Short version, I got a pullout transmission from Glenn at Salina, KS and we put it in.

I talked to an Allison engineer at their factory and the first thing he said about my replacement transmission was “Get that government S..T out of it!” The government puts 15W40 oil in trucks going to the desert. It is good for 10 to 110 degrees. He suggested any good automatic transmission fluid but not any type of engine oil because it may have additives that are bad for the transmission. He said that from what I told him the low gear pack probably blew out because of lack of lubrication. These transmissions have a custom low gear assembly.

Summary: any good ATF, but no engine oil.

Liking it it so far. Also got my CTIS figured out. It had extra valve cores in The T that comes from to the tire. So it could inflate but not blow down giving me 4 flashing lights.

I read end in the TM that if a truck was going to be hauling heavy lifting loads it had to go to Maint for CTIS lockout. Then I just started from the tire out and pulled the CTIS apart. Saw the extra core and it was obvious how they locked it out.

Played with the system and its working good now.
