M939 axles

Hi Guys,

I'm looking to change a couple of leaking gaskets on my M939 series Rockwell Axles.

Does anyone know what Rockwell model number they are.........?? or where I can search the TM's or look for an identification tag that would help.

I just assumed you were talking about the inner wheel seals. Where are they leaking exactly? I have the parts TM open on my PC right now.

No Rockwell tags on your axles?

Try Clark Truck. They have been helping me with a lot of odd-ball 939 stuff lately and their prices are good. They advertise price matching too.

I have seen a tag glued on to the axle but it will take some effort to recover the ID number but I will give it a go.........

Chris......that number is for an A1 or an A2.......they may be different from looking through the parts manual I think.........Thanks

I did see a tag quickly on the front axle but I'll have to remove the layers of paint....Hahaha and as soon as the rain stops I'll look for more on the rear axles as well.

I was able to clean off the paint and the tag on the Diff read Rockwell " A 3800E 473 ". I had then called the local truck parts store and they did confirm that it was a Rockwell number but it was going to be difficult to even get just a pinion seal or gaskets for the Diff. I did come across a good web site on line that offered a lot of tech support as well as knowing exactly what seals and gaskets I was looking for without question. The parts came as expected. I had put in return call for three more pinion seals since I had such good luck with the past order.

Boyce Equipment did an " OUTSTANDING " job making sure I had the correct parts ordered. I would recommend them to any Steel Soldier in need of Axle parts for their MV.

Glad you were able to source your parts! If you have leaking seals on your truck, then that means you must be putting some miles on it. How's she doing other than a case of the seeps or drips?

I love taking out Sharleen on a weekly basis. She is running so fine that it was time I got down to the finer details like the pinion seals. The seals were one of those pains in the butt leaks that would drip enough to be annoying and show on the axle.

I changed all six of the pinion seals on all three axles. After changing them there was one that leaked a little that I had to take off the flange again and put a speedy sleeve on it. Once I did that they are all bone dry now........

The pinion seals between the tandem axles were the biggest pain. Not to say putting 350-400 lbs of torque by hand was easy either. Some of them it took almost 600 lbs to break the nut free. I'm just happy that they aren't leaking any more.....

Wow! That sounds like a fun project! Congrats on getting it done. I can't wait to get my truck roadworthy so I can start doing some longer shakedown runs. It's all those little details that makes a truck really nice. Hopefully we'll get to compare notes at Aberdeen next year!
