M998 muffler

I am the maintenance officer for my local Volunteer Fire Department. We have acquired an M998 to use as a brush truck. The issue I have is the pipe going into the muffler broke off at the weld. Does anyone know where on could be purchased at a reasonable price? Anyone know of a used one that is good that would cost a lot? The NSN is 01-188-3218 with a part number of 12338309 or 23244A. I have searched and can find it as low as $600... Just seeing if there is a less expensive route for we are a small VFD and the more we can try to save the better. Welcome to the site. I can't answer as to where to get an affordable replacement muffler, but I did have the same problem. What I did was wire wheel the broken area, and slip a collar on it, cut from a piece of exhaust fitting from the auto parts store. The fitting was chosen such that it allowed the remaining exhaust pipe to slip inside, then cut to fit, etc. Weld the new collar on and clamp the pipe as normal. It's not a permanent fix but mine has held a couple years.

just have a shop install a new muffler, or just remove it altogether and run straight pipe.

You don't need an OEM muffler. I ran straight for awhile, but since I daily drive my M998, the loud just got tiring. I went to a reputable muffler shop and had a Magnaflow installed.

I would think you should qualify under this program.
