Magnetic fuel filter

Last year I made and installed a magnetic fuel filter to help prevent damage to polished metal to metal seals on the lds465-2 engine.
After only a few hours of operating the engine and mostly at idle/low rpms some metal dust is trapped by the filter.

(Just an update, couldn't find my original post.)

I have to wonder how much of that the filters would catch. I might install something similar after my filters to see what they miss.

Beyond good resolution on my scanner, but it's like a fine powder and certainly abrasive to parts like the IP plunger and FDC piston (causing fuel to leak into the crankcase). I didn't want to take any chances with the, to the -2 engine, unique IP/FDC.

When we clean tanks we typically use a 30 micron filter. For fuel polishing we filter down to as fine as 2 microns. For a point of reference, 30 micron is about half the size of a human hair.

We have threads that recommend installing a clear fuel filter between the filter and the IP, so you can see if there's air in your fuel. They say to take the filter element out. I replaced the filter element with 4 high-power magnets, 4 mm x 40 mm alnico rods. (Neodymium magnets start to demagnetize at 180 degrees, and our fuel can approach that temperature on long drives on hot days. Alinco is rated to 300 degrees.)

I got the magnets from guysmagnets.com, and the filter from Amazon.

Cleaned the filter again a couple of days ago and the fuel tank is still producing rust particles...

Checked my log and it's about 46 hrs of engine running time since last cleaning.
