When my power goes out I light my house up, don't want any wet stacking going on! Lol I tell my neighbors I'm on a different circuit than them! Gotta have a little fun during an outage!
I do the same thing, but more for a load balancing boost attempt on the lowest leg displayed on my generator panel. I often find 1 leg lagging by a few amps, so I turn on 12 halogen track lights that usually are on the lowest leg that are up in my vaulted ceiling. I have (6) 4'x8' windows rising up to a peak looking out over the valley below. I sometimes wonder if my neighbors, without backup generators, think I'm flaunting having power when they don't... Oh well, they can always drop by to charge a phone and have a hot coffee/latte while they wait.

I use a PowerBack Alarm that I attached to my panel. It's definitely a screamer when power comes back on. Though if you have a large well insulated house you may not hear it very far away...

Solution: Put a baby monitor in garage to listen for when the PowerBack begins screaming in the garage or other distant panel locations.
I just installed the Reliance PowerBack (very easy to install btw) and noticed the same thing. It's loud in front of the device but barely noticeable a couple of rooms away from the Garage where the main panel is. It probably won't wake us up in the middle of the night but good peace of mind to have an audible indicator the utility service has returned.
