I have never been able to weld sheet metal with my stick welder. I’m am not a professional welder by any means. So I bought a MIG welder and use it with argon gas. What a game change! Better control, less warping, and no slag to deal with. Can you borrow a MIG from someone to try it out? Perhaps you have skills to use the stick welder, I know I don’t! BTW I seldom use my stick machine. Only for heavy applications (1/4 in or more). My MIG is very versatile.

Don't ignore the value of clamping a heat sink when you have access. It makes all the difference for me since my MIG is a non gas rig. The smallest flux core I can find is .030. 025 is better for sheet metal but you need a gas unit.

Copper plate works great for a removable backing plate too....if you can afford it.

I've been using steel bar stock and sometimes it inadvertently becomes part of the repair!

Aluminum flat stock works well.
