manual transmission conversion kit available ?

Hello,

i have a m1008 with th400 and np208 . I searched the forum but can't find if there is somewhere a "conversion kit " or something available to fit a NV4500 in the car .
I would need all , the transmission, clutch , bell house ? perhaps a NP205 ( i read it would be better because of the different oils of nv4500 and np208 )too and other drive shafts or just the rear one then ....

i would be happy if i would get a answer

Find any 3/4 or 1 ton Chevy pick up with the standard trans and grab all of the stuff. I do not know exact years but they are pretty much universal. The early 70's would have the T18 and the later would be the SM465.

if you stay with the np208 there is no need to change drive shafts.
other than drilling a few holes in the fire wall and cutting a hole in the floor it should be a bolt in deal.
if you are looking to do the swap just to gain speed i would recommend changing gears instead.2cents likely would end up being cheaper and less of a head ache in the end. oh and no need for special oil like the nv4500. i paid $28 a quart.:evil:

I believe there is/was a kit, with everything you need if you can't source them seperately. petersens 4wheel or fourwheeler magazine had it listed in there project M1008 vehicle build story I think. I'll try to find it.

The clutch load will not be an issue. The 6.2 came with a standard transmission in thousands of trucks and wreckers.

Plus with this conversion, clutch safety switches can be omitted. Starting with clutch depressed assures bearing wear until oil pressure increases.

There is one other reason for this conversion, on my (soon to be released) M1031 SECM, the PTO driven generator will have much easier frequency regulation with direct drive instead of forcing the governor to hold through the torque converter.

The 27% overdrive will be a help with the 4.56 gears on the road since I-10 is now 75 MPH. I feel most comfortable at 65, the engine not so much with the TH400

a gear vendor for np205 or np208 is about $3090

I have been doing a lot of homework on manual trans swaps, and after three months of work and a phone call to my wife's uncle who is a gm engineer. I found that gm used a zf-s6-650 six speed trans in their 1 ton 4x4 trailer package. GM engineer said trans is as bullet proof as you can get.

And as expensive as you can get! I don't understand doing a transmission swap into a truck where the transmission is worth ten times the value of the truck. A four speed, gears and overdrive is a tried and proven setup and all of that would cost a quarter of the price of the 6 speed. Unless you have some real good connections.

You will also need the small ratio carrier (part the ring gear bolts to) for 3.73 ratio for the front (Dana 60).

Best bet? Find someone wanting 4.56 gears and trade.

Nice. All I really need is the NV4500 to NP 205 transfer case. I can get the rest locally for less.

Still wondering if the thrust bearing can handle the clutch load.
Engines have been built for years with thrust bearings on the crank... stick or automatic trans is irrelevant. Slush-boxes balloon their converters & press on back of crank as well. You'll be fine -
