OK so everyone was saying 506 cast in the "valley" so I am a little confused, the "valley" is in between the cylinder banks, My GEP casting number does end with 506 if that is what everyone is trying to say...
The casting date is 04-11-P
Makes no difference what the valley says for all intents, the casting date format tells all…as Greg pointed out.

04=April
11=11th
P=2007

Of course RWH is 100% corrrect, all that matters is the cast date when trying to identify a block but I did finally spot the "506" cast in "dimples" in the valley of my GEP block so yes a 506 marked block could be a GEP.

Ohhh, i was just about to ask "how to identfy a GEP vs. non GEP".
If it is so easy by using the casting date, from when was the transition?

I am not sure but I think they changed the format for the date, GEP used a letter for the year, this is what RWH sent me
H 2001

NO I

J 2002

K 2003

L 2004

M 2005

N 2006

NO O

P 2007

Q 2008

R 2009

S 2010

T 2011

U 2012

V 2013

So it would be 2001

So on the Detroit's the code is month (1=Jan, no I used) the next two is day of month and the last is the last digit of year.
SO one of the 6.2L I have here in the shop is M201 witch SHOULD be the 20th of Dec 1991 if all my fingers are working correctly.
And if the interweb is not feeding me crud....
