MEP-803 exhaust extension

I’m looking to direct my MEP 803’s exhaust away from my house and picked up some 1-1/4 pipe to create a 90 degree extension. The initial portion contacts the generators cover. Is this going to be an issue?

I guess I don't know the answer to this question but I was watching the auction for these generators and couldn't figure out why the head looked so discolored on one with very low hours. The paint hadn't even been burnt off the exhaust manifold yet but the heads looked burnt. That machine also had an exhaust extension so I think it created a lot of extra heat to stay in the top of the machine. Just my guess though.

Yeah you don't want that hitting the case. Gotta be independent. Have spring supports for that too. Pretty heavy.

I'm facing the same issue with my 802a. I tried loosening the muffler mounts to see if I had any play, but no such luck. Haven't come up with a solution, but also haven't tried very hard... Only thing I can think of to center it now is to break all the mounts loose from the base skid, and see if the whole generator could shift a little in relation to the enclosure. (That ain't happening any time soon for me)

You need some sort of flexible connection between the exhaust extension and the generator. A flexible exhaust coupling or a a length of flexible exhaust pipe would work. Try to have the rigid portion attached to the generator as short as possible to minimize the forces on the muffler and header.

If you need more space, you could use a coupler meant for electrical conduit. That would take the same pipe thread, and it's a fair amount thinner than the black or galvanized plumbing fittings.

What's the areas of concern with shifting the engine/gen head over on their mounting bushings?
Well for starters its a lot of mass that requires removing sheet metal to access to unbolt and shift with a lift. The position of the engine and head, unless reset, should be where it left the factory. The sheet metal misalignment is far more likely in the case... especially if you have taken one apart before, and tried to chase lines back true. I take as little apart as possible now, for this very fact.

As to the physical, you need to assess clearance of the fan on the shroud, as well as alignment of the hoses to the radiator.

You can go crazy, if you try and realign a set that was taken apart and put back together, "Just a tad off". Its one of the biggest reasons the muffler exhaust rubs the hole on the top and elongates it.

ALSO!!! if you see the hole elongated, check your vibration dampers. I saw one with a huge elongated hole in the top, as I was walking a motor line. Thats the only reason I stopped to look. The hole. Inside the set, three of the four vibration damper were broken. The engine and main gen had shifted to the side,main gen to the left, engine to the right. It wore a hole in the battery, the fan had tore the fan shroud up and the shorted battery had caused a fire. This gen set had just came back from down range. The Motor Sgt told me they could not get parts for it, so they ran it till it died.
