MEP1040 control box

My MEP1040 stopped working. Totally dead, despite battery power. Cold crank works fine but won't start. Nothing seems to come on in the control panel. I opened it up and it had THAT SMELL™ of unhappy burnt electrical components. Cursory look over everything and I did not see what is fried, just smell it for sure. Checked connections, etc, tried restarting and jumpstarting after tightening all connections, nothing.
So besides the general go-over I can give it to see what is wrong, is there anything specific that is commonly toasted in these that I should focus on?
Since it's all fancy electronic gobbledegook inside should I just find a replacement box or boards? Where would I even look for that stuff? Any resources would be appreciated, thanks!
Already considering getting something a bit more clockwork like the old Fermonts but would be nice to fix this one.

Start at canon plugs. Take them apart, and look at the pins and wires on both sides. You need to find out:

1. What is burnt.
2. Where its burnt.
3. How far its burnt.
4 Why it burnt.

Getting a new control cube or box of parts may not help. If you get a new control cube, and the burnt parts run to the engine, or main gen, you have wasted your money. Find out whats bad before thinking about where to find it. It may be a very simple problem.

I have a control cube i can sell but its pricey. I love my 1040 but these fancy electronics are always and achilles heel. Check the ground strap first. You can take these boxes apart quite easily.

They sold (4) of them on GP yesterday for approx $500 each. Someone bought (4) of them earlier this year for $20 each....they're out there for decent prices.

When they went for cheap, no one had the 1040. Its a different story now. Stay on the gp site, you might get lucky.
