MEP1040 fuel tank sender?

Fuel level sensor in my MEP1040 is psychotic. Does not prevent use but is annoying. I have not yet taken it out but from what I've read they are mostly crap anyways and a lot of units shipped with garbage sensors. Is there a general purpose replacement part I can order or somewhere that stocks these? Thanks!

Where did they say the fuel sender was crap? What garbage sensors?

I've never worked on a 1040, but on the 802/803 we all replace bad senders with a stainless marine style magnetic sensor. ( Google WEMA fuel sending unit ) ( tons of threads on here about it as well )
You will have to pull yours out and see if it uses the same standard SAE bolt pattern and check what length you need, but if the sender is indeed CRAP as you stated, that would be my suggestion for a standardized replacement. Unfortunately you will need to do a little research on you particular machine to ensure the correct fit.

Did you ever get your sensor figured out? Mine is reading fuel level 0% even though I have fuel and it is preventing the generator to run. Any and all help would be appreciated!

I did not. Mine goes from telling me 100% when it's half filled, to "fuel level too high" and then it will read 23% or so when it's completely dry. It hasn't been a major issue yet since I just keep it topped off and use my eyeballs to check the level. It just tweaks my obsessive compulsion for everything to work ship shape and Bristol fashion.

The 10xx fuel level sensors are different from the 80x versions.
The 10xx sensors are a 3 wire sensor. Ground, power and a DC voltage output proportional to the fuel level. 0.5 volts for empty and 4.5 volts for full as I recall.
Replacements were available on ebay. I've bought both versions from there and tested them.

Mind helping with a link on what I need to buy. Mine is reading 0%, even though the tank is full. The generator will crank up and run for a couple seconds, and then shut down, I'm assuming because of the low fuel reading...

The only part bad on my 1040 was the fuel level sensor. I had read there was a recall on the original part and a replacement was issued. I could not source the new part anywhere so I found the original on fleebay and its been working fine for more than a year.
Original Fuel sending unit part: A026J499 or Nsn 6680-01-651-7526

Replacement model number A054f059. When i tried to order at cummins it was out of stock. This is pre pandemic btw.

Ohh, before I forget, you have to tear down half of the unit to get to the sender. 🥵
