Missing ring gear?

I am looking at buying a M923A2 parts truck and the owner insists that the only thing wrong with it is that it is missing the ring gear off the flywheel. He has started to pull some intake stuff in preparation for pulling the motor to replace it but decided it was more than he can handle. I have yet to see the truck in person but before I head out to look at it (if I decide to make an offer) I wanted to ask... can you think of any possible situation where the ring gear could come up missing?

With the military, yes anything is possible.



I would bet money on it actually being the starter, but...








That should be an easy way to confirm it if you wish to dig in.

If you want to know for sure, pull the starter and look in the hole, you should see a ring gear or the prob with the starter.

If its cheap enough, get it and worry later. I have access to a bad trans that probably has a ring gear.

Yep, I didn't realize she was so famous, well if I end up looking at it I will come back and put the mystery to rest with what I find. My gut tells me something is fishy. It is a friend of my good friend and he vouches that not only is the gentleman an upstanding man but has another 923 and is used to them. Let me preemptively replay to the inevitable "use the search function" who searches to see if a truck for sale has already been talked about?

LOL Well Gimpy If the M939 series is like the NTC 400s in the m915 to m920, The cummins engine actually uses a clutch type flywheel that is slightly modified to use on the cat 16 speed ( there a good 100 lbs + and have both the bolt pattern and surface to mount a clutch on ). Now I don't know for a fact the the 8.3 and ntc250 uses the same or not . But if they do they use like a 2 3/8 bolt to hold them on to the crankshafts. on both my m917 and m920 when they were rebuilt they installed much shorter bolts. and the shorter bolts found there way out and laid in the bell housing. thus the starter would not engage .

*UPDATE*

The truck was sold (into Wyoming I think) and apparently what they found was a motor with some badly trashed cylinders. It looks like it was pulled,maybe decided it wasn't worth messing with and then slapped back together and gotten rid of. My friend isn't sure if they have pulled the motor yet and the current working theory is the rig gear was simply left off/scavenged before the hulk was set back into place. The name written in paint pen inside the heads is one of his guard mechanics so I asked him to see if her remembers anything about it just out of curiosity.

Well, I missed this originally but I'll tell you my story. I once bought a deuce right from the guy that got it from DRMO a few weeks earlier. He didn't do a thing to it. Fortunately it was purchased as a parts truck for another project. When I pulled the transmission I found that all evidence of a clutch had been removed. The odd thing is that every single bolt and piece was replaced right down to the ground strap on the bellhousing bolt. Never underestimate what a 19 yr old guard maychanic can do.

I was looking to buy that truck for the tires and parts, but at $4500 its too high considering thats what I bought my M923A2 for which does run and my M923 also. It was my bet the military (or someone) had pulled the engine, found out it wasn't worth fixing and reinstalled it. I was in the Army and National Guard, and weirder things than that have happened!
