Motor Carrier Inforcement in Michigan

I was pulled over today, second time in two weeks. It was for a swinging license plate. After a little discussion with the officer the reason came to light, a new class of motor carrier officers will graduate soon. All currant officers are brushing up on the little things. This is the first new class in a long time. Be ready to deal with some real nitpickey enforcement!!!!

So let us see take a look at these past two weeks. A Ludington judge throws out a drunk driving charge because there was a discrepancy in the two blood alcohol tests a .29 and a .30. Also a 21 year old convicted last may of a dui pays our states new "bribe for a clean license" in April and then hits a 19 year old on a moped in Standale, drags it 3 miles only to then call 911 and tells the dispatcher " I think I was in an accident." Police believe he was under the influence, big suprise. Moreover heartbreaking beyond belief the 19 year old was killed. Hold everything, oh my goodness a swinging license plate...WE HAVE LOST OUR MINDS

State amd Federal comparisions are two different things.

CSA 2011 will take effect in all states once the Congress knows the feds can make money with this. It has nothing to do with that is right - its $$$$$$$$$'s.


What I am glad with this regulation it FINES the driver and also adds points to his CDL (or hers) where pre trip and post trips that are overlooked are no longer tolerated and pencil whipped by drivers costing companies big money due to drivers neglect.

It will eventually get to the point where CDL drivers will be as professsional as airline pilots.

You can look up CDL drivers individual driving points pre hire now - where this is effected towards a companies insurance premiums - hire a bad driver and you pay for it.
You can also look up a companies individual safety rating on line for free as we are checked daily by whom we haul for - if you drop from a satisfatory rating to the #2 level of three ratings - you no longer haul Haz Mat and possibly not that companies freight.

Drivers need to shape up or find a new proffession where they can get away with doing an 1/2 a** job.

We have a former DOT officer as a paid consultant - whom has the highest out of service violations still from TN from where he worked at the scales.

The rules is the rules, by the book. Every time we get a new crop they go "by the book". Please don't use this thread to pic on the cops or enforcement, I just want everyone to be informed of the situation. The experienced officers use common sence but you all know what nubes are like. Just know the rules and deal.

Edit: I should add, I don't know how this will effect deuce drivers. But just know if you have DOT No's on your pickup you are under motor carrier rules.

For my deuce I mounted mine to the brace that supports the front of the right fender. It is well protected there. Sorry. I know it's hard to see in this picture.

In the last year, in Michigan, they have cracked down hard on Commercial vehciles. In my area the Sheriffs tend to focus on the 1 Ton and smaller landscape guys. I was pulled over last month by a Motor Carrier. He let me fix everything on the spot and just asked me to mail in the citation stating repairs were made. No fine or ticket. I was stunned. Have not been bothered at all in my MV's

Zout, you are right, the new CSA deal is a money racket. The points you aquire go on your work record, where a company doesn't have to hire you if you have 1 or 100. Cause those points will then reflect back on the new company and make their rating go up. We have only seen the begining of this, as it will get worse. They can get you for your fuel cap not secured properly, I just went thru CSA training, it's a load of BS!

The problem is that not all states have the same rules. In SC, I don't have to display a plate, or have IFTA stickers. But does the MC enforcement guy/gal in TN know that? I would be really pissed if I got a ticket in TN, for following SC rules.

That is where the gray area is EMD. The Federal rules don't really cover what the states put into law. The states can have their own guidelines. As far as CSA is concerned, that is nation wide. But only a law enforcement officer, be it local to state level, that has been certified CSA can write a citation.

Ok for the rest of us What is CAS, if it going to CDL, OTR trucks, HOW long before it will hit US, we drive BIG trucks, big trucks have $$$$ signs all the way around, I can see our trucks being hit in the name of big truck safety on the highway, I another words, another way to get more money from the people, this really is no different then the fuel sticker crap, everybody knows what the real reason for the states NEW enforcement $$$$$$$$

I seriously doubt truck drivers will start retaking their entire CDL complement of exams every months and half of it every 6 months.

I am both and airline pilot by day and a weekend truck driver, so I'm pretty well versed in both worlds.

jwaller....you and I have got to meet up sometime and talk airplanes sometime. I'm a CFI, too, but I've been out of it for a couple of years. Glad to know that I'm not the only pilot on here, especially in the Palmetto State!!

CSA 2011 is already in effect. From my understanding, it is intended to get the bad drivers that do hold CDL's. It puts more emphasis on penalizing the drivers, not just the carriers. The truck I drive for my company has EOBR's in it already and dont worry about log books. I believe in the end, it will force more drivers out of the profession because of overbearing, cumbersome regs and over zealous inspectors looking to make a name. Maybe the Mexican drivers.........

I can appreciate the professionalism of a pilot and understand where there would be no comparison - I do not think it will ever get to that point either.

If pilots got away with what drivers did I would never fly or live near an airport.
Pilot comes on the intercom on a flight you are on - says "good morning - to make this flight leave sooner I have avoided performing my pre flight preperations - we can now leave 20 minutes earlier." I would be bailing out of that aircraft.

The point also is that drivers are going down the highway as commercial vehicles and have no clue what is working or not working - they hooked and dropped and hook and dropped again. I see this everyday - and they do not work here long afterwards. When was the last time you saw a rig 30 ft off the rear of some 4 wheelers rear bumper at highway speed (or closer).

CSA (compliance-safety-accountability) will get rid of neglectful drivers - careless drivers one by one and also companies that hire these drivers will be put of of business. I would love to work at a scale house.

My historical plate won't fit in my glove box, so it is laying on the floor. I've had LEO behind me and I've never had a problem yet...hopefully some over-zealous motor carrier doesn't pull me over!

With that being said, I do a pre-trip on my truck to make sure things are working.

Did you get a letter from them stating that ? I know in the bridgeport area you will spend alot of time on the side of the road explaining that to the M.P.S.C.
