Hey does anyone have any registration Numbers for mules??

i want to get stencils for it but i need to give him a registration Number so he can make em up







here is some info if it makes any Diffence

Are you sure it's an A2? Mfg should be Bowen-McLaughen-York

i don't know i gave all the info that was on the side data plate checked it twice it look's perfect doesn't look like someone tried to imprint the numbers and letters them selfs. i'll give a pic ASAP for you 2 look at

I know it says A2, but I THINK you have an M274A3, which is an M274 that had the AO-4-53 4-cylinder engine removed and the AO-42 2-cyllinder engine installed. I have never been able to detrermine who did the conversion work or what the contract number was, but it could have been Baifield Industries, since they went on to build the first contract A5 mules in 1965. The M274A1-to-M274A4 conversion work was done by Kaiser Jeep Corp., according to the few A4 plates that I have seen.

The engine data plate is a very early Continental plate, which would also support the idea that it is an early AO-42 engine.

If you don't mind, could you check and see if your bed has the extra muffler mounting holes on the right side and see if it has 1" spacer blocks between the frame tube mounts and the rear bed supports. Also check the engine guard and see if it has provisions for mounting the engine hand crank guide plate.

I have serial number/registration number data on over 500 mules, mostly A2, A4, and A5 models, yours may be the first A3 data plate that I have seen, thanks very much for posting, I am excited to see that data plate!

PS - just noticed another unusual thing, both your engine and machine data plates carry the same contract number: DA-11-184-AMC-39(T) and the same Ordnance Serial Number: KM000016. This gives more credit to the idea that the engine was installed and the machine re-taged at the same time during an A3 conversion.
Normally, the Ordnance Serial Number would be what was painted on the side of the mules.....at least on the A2-A5 mules..

As far as I know, the mule is the only vehicle that has the U.S.A. Registration Number stamped on the data plate.

In the photo of the A2 data plate below, the U.S.A. Registration Number stamped at the top right is the number that would be painted on the side of the mule.

It will be the same for Army or Marines, the only difference would be either U.S. ARMY or U.S.M.C. stenciled on the side, the registration number would be the same either way.
I will add that the only "true" Army Contract mules were the later A5's built by Brunswick Corp. with the factory-installed starter and alternator, and the wide wheels and fenders. These mules had a registration number that had a 02A0 registration number prefix, both stamped on the data plate and painted on the side of the mule.

poof, thanks for posting your numbers. I can't read your data plate, but your numbers fit right into my database as a Baifield Ind. M274A5 built in July or August 1968 under contract DA-20-113-AMC-07129 (T).

Thanks....I would bet it's 1968....Baifield built mules from 1965 to 1969, but your serial number fits August, 1968

thanks charile for the info havent seen any holes for the extra muffler


but when i was doing the engine rebuild i looked in the flywheel houseing of the transaxle. and seen welding for the pull starter and a friend of mine told me that they would do that to upgrade the engine to the 2 cly from the 4 cly is that right?
