My HMMWV receipt plan

I've been reading everything I can get my hands on regarding maintenance of the HMMWV in preparation for mine to show up. Here's my plan for my first week of ownership:

Full inspection of all wiring, hoses, boots, belts and seals.


Anything I'm missing or any recommendations? Is an alignment a good idea?

Grounding harness and clean all ground locations. Lube everything. Fuel filter (that's a fun one). Check / replace all hoses and clamps. Have fun with it!

All is sounding good. I went with 50/50 standard green (ethylene glycol) in mine. Look over the coolant hoses good, my lower hose was mushy an another had a hard spot in it, so I changed them all an flushed the system. Fuel filter is a good idea, an checking the fuel lines as mine were hard as a rock an I had a little drip from one. If your wait to start light works ok an it fires up good your glow plugs are probably fine, but check the little return fuel lines between the injectors as they like to leak. Adding the grounding kit would also be a good idea. Grease everything, check the steering for any looseness, check brakes, air pressure, tighten lug nuts, light inspection, etc. An alignment is never a bad idea, especially with the price of tires!

Also, check p/s hoses-- especially from Cadillac valve and to cooler. Had one blow on the trail and one in the driveway.... What a mess.. For the extra 20/30 minutes I change mine now with napa braided hose before driving. Just one more thing off the to do list and it Sucks having the hood up on a trail ride. Don't forget to eyeball those 20 year old belts.......

Agree. Drove mine most of the way home from Tennessee to Kansas and was about two hours from home when the belts gave out. If they look even a little bit funny, I'd either replace them or get a set to have on hand.

Yep, that one's on my list. I suspect I'll go ahead and replace the belts proactively just so I don't have to wonder. Do you happen to have a replacement part number for them?

I forgot that one, too. About three weeks after I got it, one day it wouldn't start. Turns out one of the batteries wouldn't take a charge.

+1 to this one. I haven't had mine blow off, but its had a massive leak there three times, and I've never even left my driveway. One can only tighten this hose clamp so many times before there's nothing left to tighten... I have new hose on-hand. Just wanting to finish the wiring before I drain the system, measure, and cut new hose.

belt part number 12339359-15 you can pick em up from a local part store if need be with that number

No offense, but if this is a truck from a "reputable" reseller you should not be worrying about so many immediate maintenance needs. This sounds like a plan from a GP surplus delivery not something that has been gone through before resale. But maybe my expectations at that price level would be much higher.

TPM's check the bolts from the rotors to the differential when they service these things sometimes they don't tighten them up.

It took me some calling around. I got the its two wide from 3 places. So I asked, "Well can you align dually diesel trucks?", one place said no-we send those out to a heavy truck shop-so I called that place an they wanted like $300 for a 4 wheel alignment-Uhhh ok thanks. Another place didnt seem to want to do it at all an two other places measured their rack while I was on the phone with them. One seemed more receptive in doing it with some sweet talking from me, so I had them do it an I was very pleased with their work. Its just something new an when places aren't used to it they are afraid to try something different.

No offense taken! I did not buy this from Plan B, I bought it from GP, so I don't have ANY historical data on it at all. I don't know how long it sat or what fluids were changed when, etc. Doing all these things a) gives me a chance to get to know my new toy, and b) gives me the confidence to know that the fluids, belts, hoses, batteries, etc are serviceable. i don't want to arbitrarily spend hundreds of dollars that don't need to be spent, but without knowing the state of things, the only way TO know is to do.
