My New Knuckle-Boom Deuce Thread.

I want to be able to pull a gooseneck trailer with it, so here's the beginning of a gooseneck hitch. It'll stay mounted between the frame rails, and the top of the ball should be even with the frame. That'll make the ball about the same height as the one in my pickup.
But, I'm pretty sure I'll have to remove the bed to be able to use it. I might be able to cut an access hole in the bed with a trap door, but I don't think the neck of the trailer will clear the bed. I haven't got that far yet.

I call this the 8D mod... The Distracted, Drunk, Dumb, or Deranged Driver Defensive Deflection Device.
Since the front bumper is so high, if there ever does happen to be a collision, I wanted to reduce the chance of running up on top of some little car. Plus it makes it look tougher too!


I still need to add reinforcement to the bottom mounting points on the bumper since I'll probably add shackle mounts there like the A3 deuces.

I don't have any pictures of loading it, but I used the boom to lift and drag it up over the back of the trailer.

Here's what I did with mine. Then after mounting the extra bumper I installed my winch behind them and used the support brackets to mount my Tow-Bar on.

I like it! Is that an electric winch? That looks like a convenient out-of-the-way place to store the towbar.

I hate to admit it, but the stump won. Even with all the brakes locked and extra weight on the back, it still just drug it across the concrete.

Well I finally got back to working on the gooseneck hitch.

I originally made the mounting holes 1/2", but decided to go up to 5/8" instead.




All the fabricating is done, just waiting for the rain to stop so I can paint and mount it. I did find out that the neck of the trailer will hit the bed, so I can't put a trap door in the bed and will have to remove the bed when I want to tow the gooseneck.

The shaft seal on the hydraulic pump for the boom gave out and was pouring oil, so I had to replace it and the shaft bearing. It was a challenge find a new seal cause neither the pump nor the seal had markings on them that could be crossed to anything. I finally found a seal by measuring the dimensions and finding one that matched.







I think the bearing and seal failed because the pump was chain-driven. In trying to find parts for this pump, I found out that many of the pumps of this type are not designed for the side load of being chain or belt driven. So, I decided to change how it's driven... I never liked how it was mounted anyway, so this was as good a time as any to rework it.
It seems like one project always leads to another, and this one was no different!

In keeping with my signature, I laid under the truck and stared at it for a good long while, and here's what I came up with...

After lots of cutting, grinding, and hammering, I finally got the pump bracket off the truck. I figured I would be able to reuse the bracket, but would have to modify it a bit. It needed more upward adjustment...





There was just enough room for the bracket to fit perfectly on the transfer case support and use two of the existing bolts.

Picked it up at a swap meet awhile back and this is the first time I've used it. Haven't tried it in the horizontal position yet.

Another reason for moving the hydraulic pump is it was in the way of having a spare tire in the stock location.
With the pump relocated, I could install a spare tire mount. After more staring and measuring, I decided a stock mount could go back in the stock location, but would have to be lowered 1 1/8" to clear the frame reinforcement and U-bolt. I didn't want to drill more holes in the frame, so I re-drilled the spare tire mount, but I had to add some metal to it first...






A little repair was needed... I wonder how someone managed to bend this? The rest of the mount was fine.







I also had to replace the cable.
